Vidya at Cannes 2013: ‘Zulu’ Premiere & Closing Ceremony
For the closing ceremony of Cannes, Vidya opted for a floor-length Sabyasachi anarkali featuring a shimmering sequin dupatta. Braided hair and a matching clutch finished out her look.
Did she finish it out with a bang? Not quite, but she did look nice!
P.S. Here are a few more looks of her getting ready with Sabyasachi while at Cannes.

should have gone for that green we saw in vogue diaries
No! Nothing works – I HATE sabyasachi now. I have gone off him sadly. He has made V looka dowdy matron. She looks senior than everyone on the Jury. V should have put her foot down! If she does not care how she looks or about fashion than why have sabyasachi design her look and even come dress her in Cannes everyday??
I think she looks amazing and did manage to finish it with a BANG and I think you guys are BLIND!
i totally agree with you! She looks AMAZING!
Totally agree with you, such a PERFECT look… absolutely loved it
Good she changed her hair…but she is literally drowning in all that fabric…
I read sabyasachi tried to explain Vidya’s looks by saying she wanted to look “respectful”…but does respect comes to a lady only when she is covered head to toe? I know Vidya prefer longer sleeves but all her looks have not even an inch of her arms showing…That is costumey and bordering on ridiculous.
She is a judge there, she is already respected for her body of work. An Off-shoulder dress or a sleeveless blose won’t make a lady less respected. Love Sabyasachi’s work but just wish he’d stop being so prude(for the lack of better word) in the name of all traditional/indian/heritage.
I am not expecting Vidya to change her style, just wish she kept her original style like Nandita Das…Except for one bronze sari look, all look too forced on her.
Bang on, crack. Couldn’t agree more. I wished he used more vibrant colors instead of black and whichever dull colors he could find. It’s a film festival but most of the looks were like as if she was mourning.
completely agree with you on that ‘mourning’ bit.
If this is the rule then sonam is most unrespectfull lady in cannes as she did wore strapless gown :P i.e. “offshoulder” dress :P
I agree with you 100%. That word ‘respectful’ and how Ms. Balan and Sabyasachi chose to interpret it make me cringe. Somehow smacks of being patronising.
Well everyone has their own views of the word “respectful”. I think she carries the look off very well. Fashion is an individual choice and it is way better than just being a hanger for a stylist. Shes expressing herself in her own way and I don’t think anyone has the rights to dismiss that.
Obviously its individual…that’s why some like it and some don’t. I am not dismissing her or her right to dress her own way. I also have my rights to like or dislike something and express my opinion. I guess that is the whole point of this blog and open comments. Some looks I loved, some didn’t, where’s problem in that.
About being hanger for a stylist, well its not like she picked up first thing from a closet. She used a professional stylist and designer. Every look has been carefully designed and curated. Now saying that she wasn’t there for clothes(not you but what Sabyasachi himself said) is just trying to make the whole exercise look like a joke.
I just have problem with associating respect with being covered head to toe in fabric. Respect comes by your character, work, integrity ( which I am sure Vidya has in abundance) not by fabric used per square inch of your body. But then, that’s my opinion. Everyone is free to disagree.
This^^. I so agree with you.
Not a fan. Sorry. Wish she’d worn something simpler. But I said that about every look of hers this Cannes. Just seems so contrived.
the high neck looks quite suffocating. this outfit reminds me of what the nuns used to wear in my convent school back in india. vidya is a sensual, strong and independent woman in the prime of her life. i’m sure she could rock a less nunnish look.
I have no idea why she covers herself from head to toe in these long flowing gowns that really mask her true figure- for a minute I thought she was pregnant.
i have appreciated most of the other appearances during her Cannes run, but this one i just can’t fathom :/
Usually a Vidya fan, but now I seriously think her left arm is STUCK in that position! if there’s no palla to carry, she drapes her dupatta thus!
looks like a tight black blouse with a green cotton petticoat.
too.much.fabric!!!!!!!!!!!
So fugly, i feel suffocated looking at that thing called an anarkali. And btw where are her *girls* o_O
Head up, she looks the best she has during the entire festival. But I can’t breathe when I see the rest of the outfit – and not in a good way, either.
‘Head up’? I mean neck up.
Finally! She got it right. Approve!
Her hair and make-up look great. Don’t really mind the anarkali either, although the colours are too sombre and I don’t understand this obsession with covering her up from head to toe…My main gripe is with the high waist. It’s hard not to look pregnant with this particular style, and the hand placed protectively on the tummy just reinforces the illusion.
Of course, if she is indeed pregnant, I take back everything I just said :)
I may be in the minority but I love it .
Sigh, still a bit costumey. But inexplicably I like it. Though I wish the dupatta was the flimsy kind. And the colour a bit brighter. Or the purse was a different colour.
I once read a lengthy interview with Sabya. He’s a thoughtful man but something has gone amiss.
I do wonder if he is aiming for the middle east market – because this gives off a very modest yet opulent vibe (nothing wrong with that at all, it can be fabulous when done well- you just wonder why at Cannes).
I like. It looks classy.
The look seems repetetive!
I for one love this look. True, she’s swathed in yards of fabric, but the muted colors look wonderful on her. The side bangs should have been given a miss. I cannot explain it…Vidya looks perfectly calm and and content at Cannes.
One should dress according to their body type, and high neck blouses dont suit Vidya.
I dont understand why Sabya decided to dress her in this conservative Maharani style. Reminds me of the 1950-60’s maharani’s, expected something inovative.
Somebody please tell this lady..there are other designers too !! Either she is too afraid to let her “not so fashionable” self to reveal in front of the world,so she opted for sabya looks to look fashionable or she thinks she is aging too fast..thus sported these looks. :P
Sabyasachi gave the same blouse to aishwarya also
Too much of a cost cutting
Obviously, Aishwarya’s fascinatiion with tents was a contagious disease.
LOL! you are SO wrong for that!
This one makes her look so frumpy!
I am on the fence. Yes that is a lot of fabric….but she looks good.
This woman cannot dress but at leat she looks a bit elegant in this outfit!
what? is there a film premiering at cannes which stars vidya balan as a pregnant anglo-indian circa 1880? is she dressed in character?
Just One Word……B..A..D….
I am very proud of Vidya for conducting herself with so much ease and elegance (barring the ghunghat episode). In some of the non red carpet pictures, and she is so at ease even when she is with the likes of Spielburg and Ang Lee, and the statuesque Kidman.
My whole gripe about her appearances is directed towards Sabya. Look at the unflattering fit of the lehenga. She looks so lovely neck-up, love the hair and I like the dupatta. But for him to dress up a longtime friend, one who has complete trust in him, in ill fitting clothes – why?? And Vidya does have better things to do there than to worry about her looks, so blame rests mainly on Sabya.
+1
She looks awesome.
Im upset that an actor as effervescent as her , had to go around looking so matronly..
thats all i have to say
Bah… summer on the Cote d’Azur, Bond, yachts, white beaches, gambling at the Casino, the Croisette… a time and places that mere mortals can only look through the glass at…
…and she wears this.
what a mess. i hate her hair, the outfit is just too much fabric and i HATE the way the purse has matching embroidery. her chunni looks so heavy and how she has to stand there with her arm crooked. her bust doesn’t fit and this entire sabya from head to toe everyday went so wrong. The “respect” thing I find so insulting. this outfit looks like something from the pioneer days doused in embroidery. i’ll take Aishwarya’s top knot beauty pageant bun on a tacky sequined gown over this any day!
Never mind Vidya – dowdy as usual. Who the heck is the bare-chested guy behind her????
Hahaha.. That isnt a man! Look again- Its a lady in a strapless dress :) Maybe Nicole Kidman.
its very dramatic but yet i find it better than all the stark traditional looks with the big bindis that she wears ALL the time. Its refreshing.
She should just asked Nandita Das to dress her rather than hire this overrated designer with the ugliest clothes.
the different hairstyle really works for her….and thats about it. i dont think i loved anything she wore at cannes, some were ok but the rest were meh
HOW OLD IS SABYASACHI ? My gawd he makes this bucket of a star even look older
I like it . This was her best look
I think Vidyas “costumes” at Cannes completely gave the wrong impression of fashion in India..
I’m all for Indian clothes on red carpet .. but why these phenomenally-gone-wrong, specially contrived looks obviously designed to make an impression of some kind? (in this case – dowdy)
Honestly, does anyone, including Ms Balan, dress this way back home, like ever ???
So why are we presenting some non-existent fashion on global platforms?
Wear a sari for god’s sake…whats un-respectful about that????
