Perhaps to let the ladies shine, the Bachchan men went with black outfits. I already told you I didn’t like Aishwarya’s sari but I have to say I am digging Jaya’s cotton one.

The Bachchan family color coordination-‘oh so awww’ or ‘oh so naah’. ;) I think its a lil ‘awww’.

  1. I absolutely LOVE Jaya’s cotton sari. Would have looked even better if the sleeves were slightly shorter so as not to look so matronly. But overall I’m thrilled to see Jaya with her hair tied back, in a pretty sari and most importantly: SMILING!

The more I look at Aishwarya’s ensemble (sari, blouse and make-up) the more I hate it.

  2. Looking at Malaika Arora’s pictures in the Monisha Jai singh dress,I am surprised at how much more youthful and fresh her face looks when compared to Ash’s,especially with her being older and a mom too.Ash definitely has caked on the make-up in addition to a very blingy OTT saree

  3. Aww for the family, but a resounding nahhhhhh for the Saris the Bachchan women wore! Ash is too decked up; Jaya is too, well, where do I even start? Let’s just the cotton sari she’s wearing, I find plain unattractive and the way she’s wrapped it makes it seem like… nevermind! It’ll go against the rules if I say anything else. ;)

  4. Yes, Jaya Bachchan is wearing a tant saree. I like that she has draped it in the Bengali way, especially for this event. Blouse could have been better, but she is so much better suited for the occasion than the blingy bahu. The men look good too.

  5. aww as a family, but aishwarya in a more toned down saree would have made this a picture perfect moment for te Bachchans, ofcourse wid abhishek looking up…

  6. Minor, but notice how Abhishek’s buttons are blue and red? LOL – never seen that before! Also, he should grow a clean goatee or something because othervise he looks like a kid next to his wife.

  7. Jaya is wearing the traditional bengali “jamdani” saree. these are usually hand woven. it’s not a cotton saree with prints. Aish looks glamorous neck up but that saree is just not my taste.

  8. AMit gee looks the best here. I am very dissapointed in Ashwariya…that color hurts my eyes and the gold is not helping much. SHe shouldve worn a simple sari with light embroidory. But congrats to her for the padmashree

  9. Aishwarya’s saree hurts my eyes. She should have worn something more formal . I would have loved to see her in simple Kanjeevaram saree for an event like this.

  10. Jaya looks great , lovely saree, she has worn it in the bengali way I think , reminds me of her good old guddi, hrishikesh mukherjee days
agree with the others aishwarya should have gone for a classic saree for such an occasion.

  11. Ok Aishwarya Rai looks gorgeous, for sure, soooo gorgeous that I felt she was a plastic doll :D hehe, but yea its alll so “awww-worthy”

  12. I think jaya is wearing what is called a dhakai jamdaani.. it is a traditional cotton-muslin sari that bengali women wear.. she has even draped it like that..

  13. I thought Aishwarya’s sari was fine though a bit blingy. What I get repulsed by are blingy blouses in gold, silver, metallic colours and.. I have seen Mandira wear a couple which I didn’t like as well. I wonder though what kind of a blouse would have worked if not the one that she is already wearing with this sari??

Jaya.. looks decent and refined.. ok! I am just sitting and thinking if looking plain jane is obvious at such events (I mean Twinkle as well).

The men look fantastic… I like Abhishekh in his suits though this is nice for a change… and something about a band-gala that reminds you of such events.

  14. okies, I think the whole group looks like as if they are in someone’s Baharat (I hope I spell is right I meant the group who goes from groom side to the bride side’s house ot pick up the bride) they are too flashy too blingy too over the top with makes up, I am indian so I dont know the culture well but I guess if Jaya wore something beige , silk saree maybe in Beige, Abhi wore something that had simple black bottons, and Aish wore something baby blue or they would have look appropriate for the ceremony which is a formal official gathering in some goernment hall or office, but here all I can say when I see them is “Bharat is coming hurry”

  15. i think they look quite nice together. and ya first time i see jaya smiling so yay. comment for ash, well she is representing a blingy ott industry so actually i dont blame her for not showing up in khadi:)

  16. Surprised that nobody felt that she should have worn something western! After all the comments about why frieda should not have worn something Indian to the Oscars…Now before you attack me, Aki is not wearing something Indian either.

  17. Aishwarya’s saree could do without the gold trim. But aside from that they look fine.

Some of the comments about Jaya are petty – ‘she looks like she did not even wash her face’. That is low.

  18. @ kahlu ..that would be something to see her come in a sexy shift dress at the padma shri… but who am I kidding that isn’t going to happen.. and she rarely dresses sexy

  19. they all look good together! i think jayaji is wearing a bengali cotton ” taat” sari or is it a “jamdani” sari! wait! will ask my maa, as she has exactly the same sari she brought from kol.

  20. I think Jaya’s sari is a Dhakai. Nice to see her in her “heyday as an actress mode” (elegant handlooms, the person next door look) and not the blingy stuff she has taken to wearing of late – this suits her way way more.

Ash on the other hand has blingX10. That and the “bhadak” colour – not a good look. Seems she can’t find a happy medium between the pastels and this.

  21. Love Jaya’s saree – traditional hand woven and worn in the traditional way – full marks to her! The men look totally dressed for the occasion – just don’t understand why Ash wanted to make such a shrill screaming statement with that blingy saree of hers – a traditional weave by Sabya would have been so much better for this occasion being National Award and all – i like how Twinkle turned out simple and beautiful, allowing Akshay to hog the limelight on his special day :)

  22. The minute I saw Ash on TV i wished she’d worn a classy Kanchipuram Pattu Sari or an elegant Jute silk instead of this tacky one. Reminded me of her first Cannes appearance where she stuck out like a sore thumb!
Good choice for m-i-l though I’m suprised she wore it with a i-am-so-used- to- Ms. President look. She usualy dresses much neater.
    Twinkle looked F.A.B so appropriate.
So did Ms. President in a silk Pochampally.
COuld we have her pictures please??

  23. Ash needs to be reminded this was not a film award function that she was attending but was receiving the Padmashri. her sari is absolutely OTT – red and gold for god’s sake looks lovely on a bride not someone receiving the Padmashri? she should have worn a traditional classy sari instead.

Amd Jaya looks good – she’s worn he sari the bengali way. Only problem with this is that is gets crushed very fast and looks all crumpled at the end of it.

Twinkle looks so pretty and elegant in her simple white outfit – she is the only one among the ladies who is properly attired.

  24. i still cannot believe that someone would wear anything like ash did to a ceremony like that….there is absolutely no excuse except as someone said that she was performing at the event (which i dont think she was). The cotton saree on Jaya is pretty and very appropriate

  25. Ahs looks readt for an ‘item number’ performance. Off topic..but abhishek is looking so much better these days!

  26. @P – Ash is not younger than Malaika, she is infact two years older. Ash was very inappropriately dressed for the occoasion, not so much the saree (a NEETA LULLA- surprise surprise), but the kind of saree. Jaya looks like a politicians wife. The colour of Ash’s saree was good not the design

  27. Ash’s make up is ghastly! Its making her look like a wannabe! !!! So is the saree. She dressed so much more elegant at the Filmfare awards. She should have gone with traditional silk saree ( Kiron Kher anyone? ) or a sophisticated sabyasachi creation.

  28. I think Jaqya’s saree would have looked better if it was a combination of beige and red…I really didn’t like Aishwarya’s saree. agree with “justcasually” a simple silk saree would have been amazing here..checkout twinkle….love he simple outfit

  29. OMG!! How can anyone wear this to such a formal event!! No wonder its a Neeta Lulla ! What kind of a designer is she if she cannot make a person wear event appropriate attire? Why does Neeta Lulla does this to Ash? This is a Cannes deja-vu!! The men are OK..Jaya looks nice.So happy to see her traditionally drape the saree, but Ash – alas! Saree..to flashy and tacky, Make up- very OTT.. Why o Why did she not go in for a Sabyasachi?? And yes, Twinkle looked absolutely stunning and elegant !!

  30. 53 comments and I am in splits.Wow you guys noticed the red and blue buttons on Abhi’s kurta/jodhpuri.ha ha….

    Agree with the rest

a)The more I look at Ash,the more it’s hurting my eyes. That saree and makeup are so 90’s.Why oh why,Aish?

b)Jaya has not looked so gooooood in ages, literally after “Parichay”

  31. @Adit,Wikipedia says both of them were born in the year 1973 with Malaika being born in April and Ash in November. So that makes Malaika a few months older.Even if she is a couple of years younger,I still stick to my point, her face and fab figure make her look much younger.Ash looks a well-preserved 45 year old woman with the overdose of makeup.

  32. ash’s look: OTT, inappropriate, TOO MUCH CAKED UP MAKEUP. but whats new.

    jaya: simple, elegant, suits her.

bachchan men: joru ka gulaam. wives wanted to stand out, so they went with black…again.

  33. I really would have loved to see Ash in a simple Kanjeevaram and simple traditional jewelry. But no, she had to go ahead and wear this jatang in-yer-face sari that looks more like a bad praful/vipul sari seconds sale discard!!!

  34. this was neither the time nor place for ash’s shiny red saree. and its certainly not something i expect anyone to be wearing off a film set

  35. you guys – there has to be a difference in the way Twinkle and Aishwarya dressed to this event. you are all missing the main point here – Aishwarya actually WON the award. how can you expect Ash to dress like Twinkle?
Twinkle looks good and elegant, just the way the wife of a Padma Shri award winner should dress! Its a good thing she wore what she did because that means she is giving the spotlight to her husband.
Ash’s sari was quite blingy. But she carried it off well and looked beautiful!
I’m not sure what the big deal is about Jaya’s saree. It looks like those my grand mom wears at home! I’d rather she wore one of her Abu Jani silk sarees.
The men look so cute!! I loveee Abhishek (but not with Ash :p )
