In Dolce & Gabbana
For her final official appearance at Cannes, it was head to toe Dolce & Gabbana for Ms. Kapoor.
Now, this was a look that we loved. A part princess-ey and tad whimsical but completely girly.
P.S. She wore the Dolce dress for a photoshoot for L’Oreal too a few days earlier.

Plus, it’s age appropriate. She looks cute !

Even though I’m a huge fan of her, I wish she dressed a bit more “younger”.
Class doesn’t come only with “old looking”-outfits and hair styles.
Now, this is what I was expecting from her. She looks AWESOME! Totally worthy of her fashionista tag.
They’ve done a nice job touching up her nose on the photshoot pic! lol Nice look nonetheless. love it
this is too much like prom night. its a nice dress and all but the accessories r too outlandish and why match the shoes exact;y with the dress?
i do love the neckpiece in the shoot
OMG effing ADORABLE
Don’t like it! Looks dated to me, not classic!
What is this? A 5th grade fancy dress show? The pic from the photoshoot is awesome…otherwise the outfit is not working. The makeup and the hairstyle makes her look older.
(Disclaimer: I am a Sonam fan)
I agree with Padma. Although the individual elements are lovely: the dress and Sonam and the hair, it just doesnt come together in an organic, seamless way. It does look a bit 5th grade, end-of-the-year party-ish. I love Sonam but sorry, not working for me.
I second that…the photo shoot looks so good, though
agreed its like an indian blair waldorf outfit, but it looks so good! its fun and cheerful, that jewellery is great.
her other appearances were too serious.
The necklace is nice, other than that not digging it at all~
so officially she failed to impress me at Cannes!
ditto
Yupp ! Way too disappointed with both her red carpet looks ! Atleast for the dinner, she should have opted for a much cleaner and softer look :(
I agree, she was ok, there was no wow factor for any of her looks, when I saw the photos at the gucci event, I was disappointed, but the rest were so ordinary that now I think the outfit at the gucci event was her best. I loved her white gown last year.
The artificially pushed-up chest is tacky and ruins the look. This is the Cannes Film Festival not a Bollywood item song. What was she thinking? And her makeup is clownishly harsh. Again, this is Cannes not a Bollywood item song.
Just for comparison, consider how classy yet sexy Kristen Stewart looked at the Cosmopolis premier at Cannes in a plunging red dress that revealed her natural, less-than-ample assets, with makeup that was kept miminal except for dramatic red lips.
Not really liking your derogatory referencing to “Bollywood item songs” but I do agree with your overall message. Kristen Stewart was def classy and sexy and would have loved to see Sonam like that rather than like this.
I think Sonam plays “dress up” too much – it makes it seem as if she doesn’t actually have STYLE she just plays dress up with her mommy’s jewellry and her sister’s outfit choices.
As soon as Rhea posted the pic I thought.. the head piece – too costumey. This looks like a costume and not like something that should be worn on the red carpet. Any red carpet – whether it’s for a “Bollywood premiere for a film called Item Girl” or for Cannes.
Unfortunately whether you want to accept it or not, the pushed up breasts and painted-on makeup is a very popular style in Bollywood item numbers while the Cannes Red Carpet usually favours a far more discreet form of glamour. So while a heavily accentuated chest and heavily applied makeup would be perfectly fine in an item number, it’s hardly appropriate on the Cannes Red Carpet. As for the Red Carpet of a Bollywood premiere, that’s a different thing altogether.
The ‘derogatory tone’ towards item numbers is simply me articulating a personal opinion: which is that I find the dominant aesthetic of item numbers to be vulgar and kitschy. You can disagree with my opinions by all means, but that doesn’t make my tone derogatory, just because I voice an uncomplimentary opinion that you disagree with.
I do agree with you on the dress up and costumey part, good points.
I agree on the bollywood item songs and the pushed up boobs part, seems tacky and trashy. But i also have to agree with the other comments where usually a strapless dress makes the boobs overflowing even to the not so endowed women. I am a 32 C and anything i wear a little low will make it look like i am trying to show of my ample assets to the world. Sigh*
I agree. The pushed up chest really looks tacky. So not Cannes-worthy.
Ouch much! If I wear a strapless dress, my chest does that too, no ‘artificial pushing-up’ required, and I’m only a 32D. I feel like there’s this mindset where only smaller-chested girls can wear anything exposing the chest because then it’s somehow ‘classy’, whereas a larger girl can wear the same and it’s suddenly trashy. Sonam usually puts her hair in front of her chest and it’s unusual for her to wear something even a little exposing like this, which is why it seems ‘pushed up’, but I don’t think there’s anything try-hard or ‘item number’ about this look. It’s whimsical and fun; I feel like she’s dressing for herself, whereas Kristen seems to be catering to the sideboob brigade…
so much debate about boobs. i can’t recall from memory how gifted she is in that area, but it doesn’t seem artificial, if it is…it doesn’t look trashy. i didn’t even notice it.
(also, there is nothing “only” about a 32D. a 32D would push up with minimal effort. )
hehe@a 32 D-minimal effort. ;-D
Mal- I no what you mean about well-endowed women in low-cut dresses seeming trashy, but that’s not what I was trying to say here at all. That’s not a line of thinking that I agree of. Sorry if my comment upset you, but that is not what I was trying to say.
To me, her chest looks uncomfortably pushed up, if you look at her earlier post at Cannes in the low-cut Gucci suit, you’ll see that she is a lot less ample than she seems here. As for whether Sonam looks whimsical or trashy, surely that’s simply a matter of opinion?
Sorry, wasn’t too offended I promise :P Seems a matter of opinion whether she seems pushed up – I feel like the dress’s bodice has some boning might be responsible. One woman’s whimsical is another’s dress-up or trashy. No prob!
Wow…FUGLY!
absolutely love this one… the colour suits her to a T.
I agree..it looks like a school prom dress…it is different when u wear for a photoshoot and wen u have to carry urself for a biggg event like cannes…for me a bigg thumps down..
Absoltuely…and the red shoes on a red dress…even a four year kid would say nooooo…..
True that!
i LOVE this look….
BUT….
Makeup FAILS her AGAIN!!!! Oh Sonam, you need to FIRE your makeup artist!! He/she always always always makes you eyes look tired, over-lightens your concealer and blotches your foundation. Oh and Matching lipstick? Isn’t that kinda kindergarten??
I’ll go with her debut Cannes appearance anyday. She went to go too overboard with “edgy” and its backfired miserably (in the McQ)
thank goodness someone mentioned the makeup. Harsh eyebrows, aggressive concealer, wrong foundation shade and the list could go on. I’m sure most girls/women can do a better job than this with practice and youtube tutorials alone and to think these people have an army of makeup artists and stylists at their disposal. Sheesh!
There is something off about Sonam’s face in both the pics today, she looks tired and jaded! Not a big fan of the dress, Cannes is about glamour, a bit too prom-queen for me!
Amazing! She looks gorgeous! I love the necklace in the second pic. Can someone 411 it?
Those shoes are hideous!
Completely agree about the make up with person who commented before me. Sonam looks like she is sick. Was she in reality sick? She looks dull as if she is not enjoying herself one bit! It is quite disappointing. Let’s hope next year is better!
lol from reading the comments here …seems like everyone have lots of hatred for her=/
She looks fugly. Her make up is a disaster. Sonam has been a total disaster at Cannes this year. Wish L’oreal would pick another ambassador who can really look good – like Kangana or Neha Dhupia. Sonam’s looks just get uglier every day! Truly sad :-(
I love the picture for Loreal!
I dont know. There is something about this look because of which I am not liking it. I think it is the hair! I am really dissapointed with her Cannes outfits!
Only like the photoshoot pic. I don’t think the hair is working and shoes are too matchy-matchy but she is working the dress
Love the color on Sonam. Like those shoes especially.
oh! look ….. it is Dorothy from wizard of oz
Red clownish lipstick, red dress, red shoes… I don’t like it.
her shoes look satiny to me. On most others, u guys always point out satiny shoes as deal breaker but not on her!!!
Wow..her cannes run this year was a complete failure.I don’t think anyone really cares about her fashion anymore. This year’s cannes was the final nail in the coffin, methinks.
The hair along with the hair pieces and the earrings was a bit too much for the dinner …probably ok if it was in a photo shoot but in person it looks like an overload of pretty things put to together
the make up looks so clown-ish and overall the look is so date with the matchy shoes and the hair. The dress is really pretty but it’s more of a photoshoot dress than an events dress. Sonam didn’t do well this year at Cannes =(
she looks greatt!!
This looks works in every way possible, vintage yet girly, sexy yet feminine, powerful yet sensual, and it’s quirky in its own special measure, love is the word.
she should have given the earrings a miss…….and different shoes
I totally blame this red lip craze that’s ruining the rest of the makeup. For some reason people think there needs to be really white foundation to suit the red lips which is wrong and instead makes it look too geisha like.
I though last years makeup was great because her real skin colour was brought out beautifully.
Love the dress .. It’s so pretty .but I agree the loreal makeup artists are bad . Her makeup was awful in the McQueen and here she just looks tired … She looked so pretty in the Naeem khan dress and the Gucci dinner . Why couldn’t she just use the same loreal makeup artist she used for those events .
Hmmm, the photo is nice, but way too prom-ey for real life.
I think those huge earrings are a bit too much with everything else going on. And oh, the makeup is not at all camera friendly.
Mal- I know what you mean about well-endowed women in low-cut dresses seeming trashy, but that’s not what I was trying to say here at all. That’s not a line of thinking that I agree of. Sorry if my comment upset you, but that is not what I was trying to say.

I had the exact question on my mind.
But OMG I luv the dress. Sure its promnight-y stuff, but I do luv prom dresses & though these r OFFICIALY(not STRICTLY) meant for teens, I think no harm in big girls havin a little fun sumtyms. & Sonam’s quite young,’s got a baby face & a charming smile. I mean, she gives us a huge range of luks all the tym…so wats wrong with a prom luk once in a while?
That said, this dress screams for different shoes, hair & makeup.
*in reference to Sky’s comment
This look is very 1950s American prom. Watch the film “Grease” and you’ll understand.
It’s a very Grace Kelly look.
I’d give it a ‘yuck’
is her head piece a sabya?
Uggggh I hate it – it’s so Prom-y. I loved what she wore last year. This year she just disappointed.
I Love her necklace! From what I gather, she wears her mother’s designs (mostly all Indian Kundan jewelry) which I can’t seem to find any press/info anywhere. Anyone have more info on this curious thought? I LOVE the necklace, wish I knew more info on it.
you guys clearly haven’t seen the high resolution pix of sonam in this makeup and outfit. It’s cringe worthy and frankly an embarassement. you should post the high res pix with a close up of her face. :S :S :S
Katy Perry did a ditto! Please feature :)
She looks her glamorous bstttt ! she’s wear’s the outfit with élan ! well-accessorised too !
The hairstyle is reminiscent of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo…and so are her overly dark eyebrows. Everything looks fabulous but too dark eyebrow pencil makes her look scary.
