In Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

Comment image 77

Deepika attended the Star Screen Awards wearing a bustier top and ruffle skirt, both from Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. Sporting the separates with a severe top knot, she finished out her look a pair of silver Zanotti sandals and teardrop earrings.

At first glance, especially in some pics, the tan coupled with the frilly skirt felt a bit much. And in most cases, I normally soften up once I keep looking. Not so in this quite case. While I warmed up to the tan, couldn’t quite bring myself to like the outfit as a whole. I think this look fit right in in an editorial. Not so much in real life.

Were you a fan of this look?

  1. Remember the swan dress worn by Bjork long ago on the red carpet? Reminds me of that,. Deepika you are now watched by an International audience.. Please you could have looked super sexy in something else with that gorgeous tan going on!!

  2. The photograph of her sitting where the skirt fans out, she looks quite extraordinary. Yes, maybe its a bit costumey and better for an editorial. But I cant help noticing how her the natural gold tones of her skin look so beautiful against the stark white. Thank you for desisting a whitewash.

  3. It’s crazy but I kind of like it. With that body, she can pull off almost everything.

I don’t get what you mean by tan? It’s her natural skin tone and I’m happy to see it instead of all the usual whitewashing. I think it stands out nicely against the white fabric.

  4. ” one needs special skills to make someone as gorgeous as Deepika look so silly. Please stop putting her in awful clothes” – my comment on shaleena’s post. I couldn’t hold my words! Shaleena is a nightmare in the name of a stylist. But Deepika is at fault here too. I am a big Deepika fan but this is ridiculous head to toe. That top knot is plain comical. Didn’t like the ruffled monstrosity on sonam or aditi. Don’ t like it on Deepika. I wish Deepika could see the reaction to her appearances but that’s not a possibility because she has clearly stated that she doesn’t like the idea of fashion blogs.

  5. She is getting back to her original skin tone!!
No white washing and painted eye-brows.If only she could have picked a better outfit. Fire the stylist already.

  6. Even though she’s so beautiful, the tight topknot, tan and frilly dress make her look like a cross between a monk and a monkey wearing a dress

  7. So ever since Manish Malhotra decided to invade AJSK territory (ie OTT embroidery + ginormous , super voluminous garments) ,poor AJSK seem to be undergoing an identity crisis…

so here we have bottom half very Gauri+Nainika inspired (circa 2014 AW) and top half very Madonna conical-bra inspire (circa 1980’s)

My guess is Deepika’s brief to her stylist was “I am tired of everyone calling me stunningly & elegantly beautiful all the time…so please try your best to end that!”

  8. ROFLLLLL…. swan lake meets a wedding cake meets halloween.. Abu Sandeep have become senile… Even Sonam Kapur luked like a pigeon in her ruffle baby doll get up. Jackie’s sari too.. only Kangana luked grt in her white sari. Wat is this all stuff! WTHEYYYYYYYYYYY

  9. The skirt is a work of art but it takes up two seats by itself! Add to that, greasy makeup and bad brows.
However, the worst offender here seems to be the hair. Looks very fake.

  10. Are you guys kidding me?! She looked amazing!!! With frills of the skirt, the best top knot was the perfect way to showcase not only the designs on the top but also to keep the look clean. Anything apart from the top know would have been too much. Geez, HHC tuck in your bias/prejudice and be fashionably objective. The make up is stunning to! Best dressed so far!

  11. Lol I doubt that’s a ‘tan’, I think it’s her real skin tone, which she and no doubt countless other actresses are forced to bleach because we’re so enslaved to our colonial past that we Indians think only white=beautiful! Anyway I’m not sure even she can pull the dress off!

  12. Oh her stylist’s name is shaleena now? What happ to anaita she did a lot better than this,. Bring her back deeps,. The hair is truly monstrous!

  13. Love the tan. Probably from a new years beach holiday. I actually really like the look. The makeup and hair is pretty. And the dress is impactful. She look pretty and hot and high fashion. Love this look.

  14. I attended these awards and Deepika’s hair looked ridiculous irl
The dress looked pretty, but she looked like a wedding cake overall
But once you see this woman’s face, it’s so mesmerising that it’s hard to focus on the outfit :) couldn’t stop staring

  15. Actually I quite like the look except for the extremely severe topknot. In the last photo where she’s sitting with the skirt fanned out she looks like a dream. Just wish the hair was not so tightly done. It’s throwing the proportions off between the head and the flouncy skirt

  16. Tan or not her skin looks amazing! I would kill to have that skin tone! Just gorgeous! Top knot is too severe for this dress. May a softer do would have been a better choice!

  17. What do you mean warming up to the tan??? This is the first time I have seen any mainstream Bollywood actress embrace the natural tanned Indian skin, applaud her and please get over your colonial hangover of of white skin is beautiful. Just getting tired of watching foreign imports and melanin shots.

  18. She looks great. I personally loved the whole look. It’s different…the whimsical frilly skirt against the severe hair look somewhat works together. Deepika carries it off well.

  19. Well, I think everyone is a bit biased here, esp you,the ladies at High Heel. Had Sonam worn this look, you would have been in all awe of her. I am not trying to compare the two because both of them have different styles and personalities but come on. This look is beyond amazing. Deepika looks AMAZING. This is not just a frilly skirt, it is fashion and she is KILLING IT.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE IT

  20. She looks wonderful. Like a sexy and slim south indian goddess.

Ranveer and she have got a nice and proper beach tan. The pictures of her sitting in the dress like she’s holding court…gooooshh!!

I feel so proud of her <3

  21. Also what in holy hell do you mean you “warmed up to the tan”? Like a girl is not allowed to go on a beach without first checking in with the whole world on whether its ok that she tans or if she should wear a beach hat and a full length parka to make sure she doesn’t?

    Quite shocked!

    • I have nothing against the tan. I just think given the tan, the severe hairdo and the separates became too many strong elements all together.

      Reply
      • I also agree this a better comment than original…but what if this was her original skin tone (which I am quite sure is) and not a tan. Would she be automatically excluded from wearing separates, strong hair do’s or white clothes…I still don’t get this tbh..
You could definitely say that the other elements of the look don’t work for xyz reason but claiming the skin tone is somehow making this OTT is baffling to say the least

        • @Shubhneet: I went to college with Deepika. She used to play Badminton back then and still wasn’t this tanned. This is *not* her “original” skintone, its a beach tan which anyone who has gone to a beach and worn a swimsuit and *tanned* would know.

I agree with you that there is a whiff of colorism from the comment- that dark skinned people shouldn’t wear white flouncy dresses :P , but then that’s up to their personal choices- they do seem to go ga-ga over Kareena’s “perfect” skin tone all the time, so I am not particularly surprised.

          Reply
  22. Also i want to point out that P&P are a huge fan of white=beautiful crap. They never seem to point out when naturally dusky skinned actresses like deepika and sonam bleach themselves and when they show up in their natural skin tone they call it being “tanned”. Lol.
I am quite sure you wouldn’t want to post my comment after what i have written . Feel sorry for you.

    • So maybe they do find light skin beautiful. What’s their compulsion to love dusky skin? It’s a personal choice and it will be some kind of reverse discrimination to have them forcibly heap praises on the awesome dark skinned beauties just because some or all blog readers love dark skin. I personally find Kareena more beautiful than a Bipasha Basu but isn’t it my prerogative? Or does that make me a Nazi lover?

      Reply
    • Its a tan, it’s a patchy tan. It’s from the beach holiday. Am sure they would have pointed out the tan, if it were any other actress in her place. Pray even probably some one like katrina kaif. What would have been your argument in that case?

      Reply
      • Nazi lover? Where are you going with this?People like Lulu will never get it! You can stay crouched up in your own little shell. Ik- I did not want to talk about getting tanned. Katrina is naturally fair whereas Deepika is not. Argue all you want but she is not. It’s not nice to see mainstream actresses like Deepika showing up caked in make-up to look pale. Reverse discrimination? Sounds more like setting a better example to other Indians who fyi are mostly dusky skinned.

        • Yes maybe I have been living under the shell for too long and have not picked up the Internet etiquette. But my question still is – why are P&P being trolled for being in favor of light skin( assuming they are from your accusation)? When Lisa Haydon gets praises galore for her fabulous caramel skin, do all the light skinned girls get offended? So when they find someone light skin beautiful why is it “white=beautiful crap”? Do we not have the freedom to like any skin tone of our choice? Why so defensive?

  23. Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with this look. Deepika is on top of her game and dresses her part. As for her tan, it actually enhances her look. Kangana wore similar ensemble in Paris as well – ralph&russo . Kangana was slaying in a different level though ?

  24. What if that wasn’t a tan but her real skin? Are dark or golden dark girls not allowed to wear white and experiment? So backward… and to think you live in the states. Your critique makes you sound as though you’re from some backward village with snow white syndrome

  25. The gown itself is really interesting and I agree it will look way better in a magazine editorial. I wish she had worn some color that actually accentuated her gorgeous tan- maybe a coral, orange or even a purple, this just didn’t do anything for her.

  26. Ok PnP i have been following your site for years now, i know you choose not to comment on someone bleaching or getting fairer over years bcoz that is their choice, it clearly doesn’t mean that you are biased to a certain skin tone, it only means you are mature enough to let people make their choices with their bodies, some comments here are pure vitriol, i don’t get the hate . Quite surprised with the tan comment making such a big deal. Tanned or not, none of us have proof, you are allowed to make mistakes and hve opnion ignore the bullies. Keep doing the great work!

    Reply
    • So anyone who dares to have an opinion different from PnP is a bully? Good to know… Just like whitening skin is someone’s prerogative, so is getting tanned and should not be talked about. It makes it colorist(???). Also a lot of people are wondering what the skin tone( tan or not) has to do with a person looking good or not. Like I said in my comment, they can definitely say, this look does not work for xyz reasons…that xyz reason should not include someone’s skin color.

  27. What do you mean the tan felt too much and that you eventually warmed up to it? Deepika just got back from holidaying in a sunny location so her tan is NATURAL? Making such comments about liking or disliking a particular skin tone is borderline racism, and definitely not something I was expecting from HHC. Instead of applauding an actress who isn’t afraid to show off her dark, beautiful skin like so many others in Bollywood, she is being shamed. As for her outfit, I do think the frills make it look a little costumey, but this is Deepika, she can pull off anything!

  28. fake or real. there is no need to “warm up” to a tan. so its okay to look 2/3 shades lighter- but not darker? what you are doing you are subconsciously reinforcing a rubbish notion – fair is beautiful.

  29. I don’t hate this look, but this girl can do SO much better. I’m always left wanting for more. Loving the tan though! She’s back (close) to her natural dusky beautiful complexion.
There’s something eerily similar about her and Aditi’s appearances. Do they share the same stylist? They sported a similar Gaurav Gupta look recently

  30. She carries the outfit beautifully, but the makeup and hair was too bad.
The shiny face, patchy bronzer and that hairdo, while interesting, with this dress looks quite distracting

  31. She looks amazing in that past pic. But I hate that hair do. She is dusky but obviously as seen in these pictures she does not have that kind of a natural tanned-dark skin. And also if some one thinks white skin is beautiful that is fine af too. Big deal! How white skin= beautiful crap is the same as dusky skin = exotic crap. What irks me is when one set of people who prefer certain skin tone is trying to call out only that skin tone is good and put down the others. And celebs like Kajol who don’t embarrass their skin as it is and have to oblige to standards set in by society (or assumed) and do idiotic transformations.

  32. Looks like she exchanged notes for the severe updo with Kylie Jenner (Golden Globes look) Doesn’t suit either of ’em.
I love everything except the hairdo (and shine-free face would have been good too)
