Retro-Spect
While Ms. Padukone features in a shoot in the Filmfare Anniversary issue that pays homage to movies from Hollywood that made quite an impact, Ms. Kapoor covers the leading ladies that did so closer to home.
Here is a looksee.

If only she could be this versatile with her hair n makeup in real life. course im talkina u deepu!
I absolutely adored this shoot. Deepika is so very gamine in pictures that she pulls off Audrey with elan, the recreation of Vivien Leigh (one of my absolutely favorite actresses) is quite evocative, and the Marilyn look is very glamorous. What really blows me away, though, is Sonam’s shoot. She really looks the part. Comparisons by Sonam’s directors to actresses as diverse as Waheeda Rehman and Rekha make perfect visual sense if you see these pictures; she has a truly versatile face. Also, the clothes by Anamika Khanna are beautiful – they pay tribute without looking like unimaginative replicas.
Really? Deeps as Vivien Leigh , Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn?
no way wish they got some one else!
Her looks are very, soo Indian ..which is a very good thing so it feels odd looking at her like a Hollywood Icon.
I think Deepika has a quintessentially Indian yet very international face, and I do think she pulled the looks off well.
I agree, she looks a little ridiculous – I much prefer the Sonam Kapoor pics, but it all seems a bit unimaginative. Can’t they think up some original pics intstead of ‘re-creating’ these classic scenes and actresses. Lets face it nobodys going to be able to live up to these icons and will just end up falling flat in comparison.
yah….plus her features are too strong for the softness of the ladies, like audrey…
Sonam on the other hand, has fit in so effortlessly
LOVE both shoots! If I had to pick my favorite shots, it’d be Deepika as Marylin and Sonam as Madhubala.
can’t belv I am saying this but Sonam Kapoor looks stunning as Madhubala.
the deepika shoot is soooo boring. i think she is bored, the stylist is bored and so is the photographer. her classically indian features would have worked so well in the sonam version, but inspire a snore in the hollywood version.
i think dia mirza would make a damn cute vivien leigh.
sonam totally works the shoot, apart from the mumtaz.
oh PS, the left right bottom placement descriptions for deepika are a bit mismatched.
Wait. You got the top left/right wrong in the Deepika pics? I think!
Quite right. Corrected. Thankooo.
I am a huge Deepika fan, but I give this round to Sonam. The Waheeda and Madhubala looks are really good.
Absolutely Agree Sonam’s shoot is lovely!
This round def goes to Sonam. She looks absolutely ethereal. She has done all four looks so well..really hard to choose which one’s the best. But after much thought I think I’ll pick Waheeda Rehman look..hard to match someone so graceful as Waheeda Rehman but Sonam does it so well…so simple yet stunning.
Deepika looks good as Marilyn and Viviene but I don’t think she has done justice to Audrey. Am just not feeling it.
Wow, i am pretty impressed with Deepika. I always thought her features are quite Indian. Love it as compared to that past ridicule~~Vidya Balan for Audrey. Sonam does NOT look anything close to Meenakumari. But i like her in the second pic though she resembles more of Nargees(nargis?) there.
I love Sonam’s photo shoot and am a huge fan of the site but I don’t think Mumtaz was ever in Brahmachari. The actress was called Rajshree. :)
Mumtaz was in the song “Aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke charchey” in the film, I think.
They were both in the film.
‘aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche’ jog memory?
OMG!!! The Sonam photos from Pakeezah and Pyasa are my favourites! So amazing! I think probably the best shoot she’s ever done!
Not a big fan of the deepika shoot. Looks like a snooze fest. And breakfast at tifanny’s is one of my favourite movies. She is not even 1/100th the grace and charm audrey hepburn is.
The sonam shoot looks fabulous. She’s extremely versatile. Why directors don’t manage to get that talent out of her in movies is a mystery.
A fabulous model need not necessarily make a good actress.
@MP agreed. but we have hardly seen sonam. she has definitely done a lot of shoots so far so you can see her versatility. with time i hope to see the same in her movies. it’s been only 3 years. she has tremendous potential going by her 4 movies.
I think Sonam was pretty good in Aisha.
I think she was pretty good in all her movies which is why I said “tremendous” potential…potential to become a really memorable actress over time.
I love Sonam as Waheeda…so simple and gorgeous..the probably branded white bag was unecessary though.
Second fav is sonam as Madhubala.
Deepika’s are all meh..lack the personality that sonam brings.. And i am not a Sonam fan !!!
I think Sonam is channeling Waheeda from “Jaane kya tune kahi” from Pyaasa. She carries a bag in that song (perhaps not branded, and definitely not that large, though).
Sonam all the way. Love all her looks. Deepika on the other hand looks good as Audrey Hepburn but the other two looks are uninspired and boring.
deepika looks way too ethnic-indian to pull off the hollywood re-creations, plus i agree with voldemort – she looks bored / boring. sonam could have pulled off the hollywood bit as easily as she does the bollywood retro…she’s such a stunner.
Sonam is definitely the standout here!
thats really eerie..sonam totally fits for all these actresses..especially wahida rehman.
The Hollywood homage is SO boring. Anyone in Bangalore? Please go to Tasveer to see an exhibition of pictures of stars from the Golden age of Hollywood. They totally capture the elusiveness of celebrity, what true glamour is all about, when the stars let you see only what they wanted you to and didn’t let it all hang out!
deepika’s features are indian and don’t seem to work with old hollywood looks but here sonam’s got it perfectly right…well done for her
Sonam looks quite a stunner as Wahida Rahman but both of em are a tad too skinny for the vintage look,i feel
for a min i thought the 1st 2 pictures were Dipika till I read Ms.Kapoor
Don’t like the choice of actors one bit. The photography and backgrounds are amazing, so is the makeup but sonam and deepika both are unable to do justice to the original celebrities. Sonam only wears one smile as well and deepika’s face has too much of a traditional feel to work there. maybe if they would’ve switched…
oh ok :P got confused
both the would be superstars eh
priety zinta and mahduri respectively for the shoots, however, would’ve been a whole different stoty :)
AGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE :)
Deepika looks pretty, but it is still Deepika. Says nothing of the characters.
Sonam’s spread is stunning. She looks gorgeous as Madhubala and Waheeda Rehman. I love the B/W photo, she even has the correct expressions. She is the Waheeda type of beauty, even in Sawariya.
what designer is sonam wearing in the madhubala picture??
Anamika Khanna in all of them.
sonam kapoor hands down. the first three are amazing, especially the waheeda rahman one!
deekipa has typical desi looks she isnt suitin da look at alll n soman is rokcin it ! n surprised y da photograper shoot deepika for dis when day have choices like kareena or kangana y such a misfit
Aye Aye nooo Deepika as Marilyn Monroe , she’s got it all wrong Marilyn is Fiery and bold and she looks like a Shy Indian blushing small town girl.
Poor Marilyn was anything but fiery and bold.
I DONT AGREE RHEA…infact sonam is d least i think should have been considered for these classic beauties…
Oh! Sonam as Waheeda completely took my breath away…I actually gasped! She looks etheral…
They should have done Rekha and not Mumtaz on her…then it would have been perfect!
aaahhh vintage look….i like..
OLD is GOLD :)
Of the two I loved Sonam Kapoor’s shoot. Deepika looks surprisingly good as Marilyn Monroe and not bad as Audrey. Like it. But Sonam Kapoor looks breathtaking as Waheeda Rehman and Madhubala. The styling, photography and lighting are absolutely gorgeous.
I still cant get over how beautiful Sonam looks as Waheeda… so simple, but still time less.
I particularly love all of sonam’s shots from this shoot..and as far deepika i’m not a huge fan of this shoot…but on an aside I wish filmfare would have taken inspiration from these films and thrown a modern twist or any sort of twist so that both of these girls could bring out their own unique style/attitude to the shoot. I just feel like both of them and filmfare are trying too hard to imitate.
deepika looks so gorgeous in the 1st and 2nd pic…and loving sonam too,she looks best as waheeda!!
Sonam’s first photo, the Pakeezha one reminds me so much of Rekha in Neela Asmaan song from Silsila. I think it’s the hair and the red lips.
the deepika shoot is just meh!
… sonam’s looks richer because of all the gorgeous clothes and colours …. i love her in the waheeda look (minus the bag which looks totally out of place) ….
the rest i am conflicted …. on one side those scenes are from classic movies, wonderful clothes but on the other hand she doesn’t manage to capture the nazakat, the grace, the elusive superstar quality of the heroines of yesteryear.
Sonam is stunning and fits in the roles perfectly. Beautiful. Deepika’s Monroe is nice but she missed Hepburn completely. She is not in the skin of the character she is portraying.
Favorite: Sonam as Madhubala and Sonam as Waheeda
Least Fav: Sonam as Helen.
The helen photo looks so unprofessional… like someone is dancing in their living room and took a photo with their digital camera.. didnt like it at all.
I have nothing to say about Padukone other than yawnnnnn.
You mean the Mumtaz one? Yeah I didn’t much like the Mumtaz photo of hers
Mumtaz had really good curves…sonam hmmmmmmmmmm ???
I am sure before the weight loss spree ..Sonam had even better curves. But now a days no one wants curves ..everyone seems to be wanting to become a stick!!
AGREE …but watch d KWK deepika n sonam….deepika though she dont have good curves( she has more of athletic body) still she luk curvaceous as compare to sonam :)
@Nidhi: That’s because Deepika stands with her chest and butt out. None of the girls today are curvy.
Oh common Tina…that wont bring curve…
BTW kareena(present) ,Shilpa Shetty, Katrina, that Guzaarish newcomer monikangana i guess….they all have curves
Wow, those are stunning pictures, my favorites were Deepika as Marilyn Monroe and Sonam as Madhubala – especially the latter photo is really very well shot. Sonam is so versatile, I had no idea!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sonam as Waheeda Rehman
1. Sonam looks ethereal in the Pakeezah B/W snap- her expression! OMG! it doesn’t let your eyes even check out her outfit
2. The Pyaasa one is beautiful
This girl is a stunner! No really, Deepika’s shoot looks like when you pick up one of those random magazine while waiting at the beauty parlor-its soooo casual when the desired effect is to actually get an OOh and Aah out of the readers!
Sonam wins this one hands down like all her other victories when it comes to vs Deepika- and the funny thing is Deepika was supermodel before entering Bollywood! These gurls should trade careers!
Hate to say it but sonam def outshines Deepika in this shoot! The first pic is stunning! Only the orange sari as mumtaz doesnt work at all!
Lovely ! Both of them.
At least Deepika looks better as Audrey than Vidya Balan.
deepika padukone looks so good.. she fits audrey hepburn in breakfast in tiffany!! while so people might think she looks odd in the first pin… but she re-created Vivien leigh’s Scarlett o hara perfect;y :) and wow… the merilyn Monroe look from gentlemen prefer blonds , is perfect…. graceful :) as beautiful as sonam is.. i think out of all the contemporaries Katrina looks most like madhubala… however she fits in well too :) lovely smile
