In Nikhil Thampi

Comment image 18

On a recent red carpet, Esha smoldered in a custom Nikhil Thampi dress. Bardot-esque hair and make-up and a pair of fringe sandals rounded out the actor’s look. No two ways about it, she worked that look, head-to-toe.

Nikhil Thampi, the designer of her gown created this as an an homage to the recently deceased master couturier Azzedine Alaïa. Tell us what you think of it in the comments section below. Personally, while we love the idea of a hat-tip, this close a re-production blurs the line between an inspiration and straight-up reproduction. And if the idea going in was to re-create a look that close to its inspiration, then it veers in to the costume category. Yes, Esha looked hot. But the gown itself has us feeling… Let’s just say we are still processing how we feel about it.

  1. It is lovely that he calls atleast one of his creations a homage. I hope he also explains the many other inspired pieces he creates! She is Malaika bandwagon now!

    • So true you! It’s like had it not been Esha this ‘gown’ would have been a malfunction. The difference in detailed designing is so clear here.. the cut outs on the Alaïa are so delicate and well placed.. also the neck and shoulder straps being thick make it less busty when worn.. ladylike sexiness.
the Indian version is a poor rip. It’s aesthetics versus extravagance. It’s a good case study for designers !

  2. The difference between class and well, lack of it. The Alaia gown looks elegant and sexy, the Thampi gown looks anything but. Also has to do with the styling, I guess.

  3. Omggggg Indian Angelina Jolie
    She loooked damn HOT !!!!
Not everyone can pull this look but she did and how sexy is the hair and make up
    Major loveeeeee

  4. P&P you have a way with words. Been reading your blog for a while now. Love how you articulate your opinions in such a balanced and refreshing way!

  5. The Azzedine Alaïa gown is in a class of its own.
If the purpose of this copy gown was to grab eye balls then Ms. Gupta managed to do that.
I’m neutral on how good she looked.
