In Eka

For her appearance at a recent event, Vidya picked an Eka sari to wear. With her hair in a wispy knot, the actor finished out the look with silver mogra (flowers) and earrings from Aadyaa, and a clutch, ring and bracelet, all from Amrapali.

The design of her blouse is long overdue for a refresh/re-do but that gripe aside, Ms. Balan looked lovely.

      • Yeah, SERIOUSLY. @Avani: since you use the word shabby so liberally, care to define it for us too? Just so we are on the same page, of course. Thanks!

    • Everybody has their preferred style of dressing irrespective of the event or calling. she, has very Indian – earthy – down to earth kind of vibe. this is really neat and soft but maybe the hair do isnt going great with it. making it look a bit sloppy. anyway she has never really dressed loud/glam.

  1. I don’t get the hate for Vidya Balan, seriously. Yep, she’s not going to give you fancy blouse styles — which may be just as well, because many of the new styles won’t work for her as well as this regular one does. Yes, she’s never going to do a one-boob show, she’s never going to crunch up the pallu and show off her waistline, she’s never going to wear blingy designer crap. Yes, she’s not going to change up the way she drapes a saree.
All of which is just as well, because her choices are elegant, classic and representative of the way millions of Indian women wear the saree. Too bad if your tastes are not in sync with what she’s going for!

    • If she changed the blouse, they would say it doesn’t suit her body type, or she’s “stuffed” herself, or she looks “tacky”. Not sure why they bother to feature her, because all anybody can say is that she looks horrid, does not know how to dress, cannot hold her arms right, drone on and on and on…the comments are as boring as they claim her dress sense is! Change it up ladies…women with a certain body type cannot change it up too much – they don’t have that many options. Maybe it’s time to be a little more supportive of every”body”.

    • Ture Katy. I agree with you 100% and I want applaud Vidya for not giving in to the pressure to look certain way but sticking to what she likes and feel comfortable in. It’s her body and her money which she spents on clothes then why should she wear what we want her to wear as simple as that. She is a very graceful women and she doesn’t beg and request and any faishon bloggers to cover her neither she dresses up for them.

  2. She looks lovely as always! But I wish she had opted for a different color blouse – black&white Ikkat or a deep red Ajrakh. That would have jazzed up this rather plain saree.

    • You are right Sue but may be the kind of event she was attending needed a sobered down look of the representative to not take attention from main cause…:-).

  3. I am really trying to be kind here, but what is “special” about this outfit. Any indian bus , metro , market or office will have women dressed in a similar saree. Yes, women who are not tall and lanky like the ramp models, but they still wear their saree with crisper pleats, neat pallu’s and more well designed blouses. They will hands down look as good, if not better, even without an entourage of makeup / stylists at their disposal. Rather, even after a long day at work, they would look more well put together than this blink&miss appearance.

Big fat thumbs down from me. Being short and curvy doesnt mean “THIS” is a look to applauded.

    • Precisely. Millions of desi women wear normal (non designer – no sabya. Vidya Balan is a big Sabya wearer loo) non designer saris with such elan/ease. She has a stylist, wears all designer saris , accessories ( “statement” necklaces which is a comedy show in itself) . But always look unkempt in terms of hair, drape. Only compounded by uncomfortable stance. And its not like she has NOT done any one boob show in tight blouses & blinged out tacky anarkalis. Too bored to even get those links to those posts.

Also just because she is of a certain body type, she has to be excused/complimented on the shabby looks. Your last line said it all. Thumbs up from me.

      • I beg to differ; while there are millions of women who wear sarees, there are also millions of women who don’t. In fact, saree wearing is now considered unusual in certain urban circles to the extent where women are routinely asked “why are you wearing a Saree?!!” if they dare wear a saree for an simple occasion other than a wedding. That is why I applaud celebs like Vidhya who take simple handloom weaves and wear it with immense comfort. If you ask why is it so important to wear a saree – india has one of the greatest textile traditions in the world. There are millions of artisans struggling to survive and keep alive crafts and traditions that have existed for millennia. Imagine how much they would flourish if the working big city Indian woman invested a little in handloom weaves?

        • Eh who is questioning Sari wearing? Its such a beautiful piece of clothing be it simple cotton or an elaborate Kanchivaram. The point is people with no stylist, access to any designer wear or not even from those “Urban” money circles wear saris with grace. Dont know which city you are even referring to. Sari is a common wear even now. Infact they wear to make an “arty” statement. Ha! Visit metro city like Chennai – Temples you will see people from all walks of life in saris beautifully worn irrespective of the amount paid for it. They dont have model bodies nor do they have a plethora of stylist/designers to fund them like she does. Belonging to a certain body type or wearing cotton weave is no excuse to showing up unkempt. Neha for example is almost as “curvy” as her. She wears even her boxy clothes with grace. Misses are there but not shabby or unkempt like what this lady is known for.

          • All you mean is this could be done better… Maybe. But it’s not shabby, boring n no effort yes. The saree color saves her. On an aside, let’s compare stars with stars and not common people.
