In Fatherland

Draping a Fatherland sari in a traditional manner, Vidya partook in Durga Puja festivities recently. With flowers in her hair, she finished out the look with jewelry that included a stack of red bangles. How lovely is the sari?! Always been a sucker for white and gold.

  1. Me too.. always been a sucker for white and gold Priyanka. :) I have nice collection of white and gold sarees. Is it a Bengali Tant saree? Anybody knows?

  2. Maybe this material is supposed to be all crinkly, but in these pics she looks like she rolled out of bed, did her makeup and showed up with creased clothes. Not good!

  3. The material looks wrinkled because it was done deliberately, reviving the Chunot or pleated style of fabric that graced the Dhotis and sarees of the upper class Bengali men and women :)

I wish she had tied a ornate key ring to the end of her anchal, instead of that unsightly knot!

    • I agree.. nothing apart from her face looks nice..
If wearing a rumpled dress or shirt is not okay…
wearing a rumpled sari with an ill-fitting blouse is doubly not okay !!
She needs to take some tips from Nandita Das !!

  4. I am a sucker for white and gold too, but this is not a great saree. The Vidya-Balan-blouse isn’t helping matters either. She somehow still looks nice though.
Btw what is that red thing around her wrist? Also is it mandatory to wear the sindhoor? I’m asking to clarify lest I make some ignorant offensive comment!

  5. God I didn’t realise that it was Vidya from these pictures until I read the actual post..! I thought it was a 70’s south Indian heroine. But the colours look really lovely on her!

    • South Indian Heroines from that era looked amazing in their sarees and salwar suits , don’t even compare them to her. lol. And I don’t think anyone in South at that time wore the sarees this way, anyway. :P

  6. I compared her to 70’s South Indian heroines because of her face and not of her outfit here! They all used to wear such tight buns with flowers wrapped around them for festive occasions which was why I was getting that vibe!

    • Ah ok, got it. But still many wear the hair in a bun with flowers, quite common in the South. Even actors like Tammannah has been seen sporting that hair do along with many others usually for weddings.

      • Oh Avani!! You are gonna make me spell it out right!!? I compared her face to yesteryear South Indian actress cos her age seems to be quite showing in these pics!! Maybe its cos the bun has been a wee bit more tightly wrapped than normal or maybe its cos we have seen Vidya in open hair more often than not..

  7. I’m a Bengali and this isn’t the traditional Bengali way of draping a saree. The part with the knot (which used to hold keys) is actually looped around and slung over the right shoulder :s
