Vidya At Cannes 2013: Young And Beautiful Screening

Also in attendance at a screening was jury member, Vidya Balan. She wore a Sabyasachi sari and jewelry by Pankaj Surana.

Love the pop of her sapphire beads against the sari. But pray tell us, why the same do again Vidya? Wish we saw something softer on her. As for the nose-ring, looks like the Bollyland ladies are on a mission while in Cannes to make the nath (traditional nose-ring) mainstream.

  1. Wow I love it. At first I thought it is same as Sonam but boy! Does she add some “royal” factor to the look. She makes me want to redo my nose ring piercing.

    • I love it too though I personally don’t care for the nose ring as an ornament. I also like the hair-it’s the sort of hairdo that was so popular with earlier generations in India but has since disappeared. I also like how she seems to be channelling Indian dressing from the 30s and 40s with the conservative blouse and all. Thanks to Sabya for bringing such elegant fashions back.

  2. Wish the blouse had a little more open neck. She still manages to look good. But not extraordinary.
If we compared, sonam Kapoor was way way way better!

  3. Her face is really pretty but that blouse makes her look big. She should be wearing cuts that make her look thinner. I think Sabya is taking this “judge” thing a bit too seriously. Maybe he thinks the jury needs to look wise and matronly and boring. Young Sabya, make her look young because she is young!!!

    • but, not everyone needs to look sexy and young and unwise..women can be wise, matronly and boring, whether a “judge” or not..women are not men’s playthings! Does she always have to look beautiful and sexy and flaunt her figure??

      Reply
      • True but women can still dress well without having to appear like a man’s plaything. Also she does not have a figure to flaunt we all know that. We also know she is an actress and one of the best in her profession. However is it necessary that she look like she is 50 years old when she in reality she is only 35+. One does not have to expose their assets to look nice. However if she feels this is her style then good for her but she will be criticized by people for her sense of dressing.

        • I respect the fact that you acknowledge that if she feels this is her style, she can go for it. I think that is what am hoping for a woman – to dress according to her own personality. For instance, when I was a teenager, I never dressed like my peers and would dress up in a more “old” manner. But, if people had criticized me then, I wouldn’t have felt nice about it and it might have changed my personality, which am happy it didn’t. I strongly feel that a person’s dressing is a reflection of their personality and it is very dangerous to try to criticize and change it. Having said that, I do not agree with the statement of Vidya doesn’t have a figure to flaunt. Each of us is made in a unique way and there is no universal dimensions for the perfect figure, IMO. It would be nice if the world stopped discussing the physical appearance of a person and started looking at the nice qualities in them and that can bring some good and optimism in the world. This is all just my opinion and am not criticizing anyone here, but just begging to differ from others’ opinions.

      • Thanks for articulating my thoughts. I’m tired of the emphasis on looking young and sexy and alluring. If you’re a mummy, you suddenly have to be “yummy” whether you care for it or not. If you’re in your middle adulthood, you still have to be “hot” regardless of whether you’re interested in these tags or not. It’s like being an interesting and engaging person is no longer of any worth.
I know in an earlier generation, looking wise and modest were considered assets for both men and women. I don’t wish to over-romanticize the past but at least, our previous generations were less fearful of and more welcoming of the ageing process (not that Vidya’s looking older than her 34 or so years). OUr generation and the subsequent ones have developed this inexplicable fear of something that’s a very natural process that will touch one and all-growing older. I wish this perception would change. It doesn’t help that the global fashion industry is hell bent on convincing us otherwise, and that if you’re really careful and drink lots of water, you’ll look no older than 18. Yeah, right!

  5. Like the saree and blouse, but the extra necklace has to go. Sapphire is good. Also I am bored to see the exact same hairstyle for 4 straight events.
The Sabya look is getting boring too. There are so many more looks in the Indian subcontinent. What is it with the big nathnis this time???

  8. wish the blouse had a lower neck — now am seriously suspecting she’s got something there she doesn’t want us to see — but how impeccable is her saree and accessories and, most of all, make-up! please Vidya, never become a L’Oreal ambassador!

  9. The saree color is snooze-worthy, the severe hair, the nose ring, the high blouse… not working for me at all. The high neck blouse just makes her more stout

Vidya, just go ahead and wear a pattu saree already!

  10. sorry but the nose-ring is really distracting me. how can one even talk without that hitting your teeth? i guess one doesnt need to talk while walking the red carpet but surely at some point she had to speak?

  11. It is beyond my pea sized brain to understand why Indian actors and actresses have to stand out wearing costumey ott clothes and make us go oh no not again! What is wrong with a regular printed silk off a nalli or raw mango worn with tasteful accessories? why be so dramatic all the frigging time? none of the ither women in the jury or the loreal promotional gigs stick out like so… even if it does not matter so much to other countries whats wrong with showing off modern indian dressing sensibilities on a forum like this?

    • I agree. I’m an Indian living in Australia and very proud of my culture, the clothes, the rituals and traditions and all that. And i love it when Indians are given a chance to represent the country and it’s culture at a world stage. BUT but but… i HATE it, abso-bloody-lutely hate it, when those very few chosen ones decide to be so IN-YOUR-FACE with this whole tradition/culture thing… It’s almost embarrassing… I would so much rather the understated yet traditional saris and even lehngas.. Come on now.. give us a break… the nathnis, the covered head (when you don’t ususally do that in india) the OTT accessories… just a bit too much! Learn something from all those Chinese/japanese and other Asian actors and actresses who represent their country, wear the traditional clothes and do it so tastefully… STOP tryin so hard!

      • Agree. It’s terrible when Indian designers and celebrities try to express Indian culture to the point of being OTT nationalistic. I never liked Sabyasachi or the brother duo, Abu-Sandeep, who I’m guessing will style Ash. I wonder if these celebrities use some part their brains. Looks like they side blindly with their stylist’s grand visions, which is nothing more than romanticizing the culture excessively.

          • I like Sabya and his “romanticising the culture”. Without him the likes of the Neetas and Nishkas would represent elite fashion, which would be a shame. What people don’t realise is that the Cannes appearances are for national consumption. Not international. Someone like Freida got flack for years for being up with the international trends and absolutely blending in and owning the Western style sensibility. Indian want drama, and Loreal provides that. Vidya, is not Sonam, i.e wannabe fashionista. She wants to be taken seriously as an actor and judge from Bollywood. She stayed “in character”. Sabya went for the “internationlly bollywood is seen as blingy’ I will give them ethnic bling, and show how majestic and elegant it can be. Kudos.

      • I agree. We need to showcase our traditions but not in an ‘in your face’ way. It just builds on the western sterotype about India. Come on Vidya, we havent seen you sport a veil over your head in any of your appearances in India and a nathini (you may do it when you appear in character for your movie appearances!!).

      • +1 You said it! Minus the nose ring, Vidya does look good…I am so glad she is atleast getting the drape perfect.

      • You said it, Rue and Disillusioned in DC! One look at Zhang Ziyi or Gong Li on the Cannes carpet, and it’s like a textbook on how to showcase your culture without looking like you’re at a Halloween ball.
We talk of Westerners appropriating cultural symbols… what Vidya has done is nothing short of the same. That ghunghat just sent me over the edge… SO pretentious and patronising.

    • To be fair, Nandita Das and Sharmila Tagore did wear classic sarees elegantly and were not gimmicky. I think its the designers who want to showcase their work that go overboard.

      Reply
        • While there’s something to be said for the Disillusioned in DC’s original comment, have to point out a couple of things. 1, as someone mentioned, we also had Nandita Das and Sharmila Tagore on this platform, staying true to their style. As a result, no one remembers them, that they were there or what they wore. Cannes is increasingly about what celebs wear, that’s the way to make their presence felt. Dramatic is good, ordinary is forgettable. 2, the option to going ethnic is going the way of Frieda Pinto, who fashions herself as a global actor and so could well come from Spain or South America. She doesn’t do a distinctively Indian look, which is fine for her. Vidya’s Indian identity is foremost here, what’s wrong if she plays it up?

          Reply
          • Ya, but could there be something like being “too Indian”, also, to the point of being gimmicky? It’s like I’ve seen some Indians in the West go overboard with the religious and cultural stuff to the exclusion of all else, for fear of losing their identity, far more than they would do on our own soil!! Same vibe I’m getting here.

            Reply
          • A lot of people remember Sharmila Tagore & Nandita das’s style in a good way. Its true no one can forget what Vidya is wearing or ash wore on her debut in Cannes or even BIg B yesterday, but for the wrong reasons. How ridiculous is it to be remembered for the wrong reasons and made fun of?

            Reply
    • I agree. Who wears a nath everyday these days? This is not about some film promo and dressing the part. You can be Indian and chic, without using accessories that are worn only rarely these days.

All you need to look on the jury is professional, stylish and neat.

    • What’s so costumed or ott about gorgeous traditional wear? I’m glad that v is out there ‘representin’! You should be proud of your culture if you’re Indian. She stands out amongst all the wannabes in their meh gowns! Go, Vidya!

  12. Hate! That’s a lot of mismatched accessories. Whats with the leather strap watch and a blue bindi? She looks so stuffed in that blouse. So suffocating even to look at all those going on with the *look*.

  13. Is that a chikankari saree? Love the saree. Love the whole out fit. I am on the fence with the nose ring, but in the old days they were this big. Jewels are drool worthy. Vidya scores again!

  14. While she looks good… it is very repetitive. Its just Day 2 and I am bored. If Sabya is all she is going to wear, with high neck blouses and tight buns, its going to be a boring run for her. She is capable of so much more… I wish she mixed it up a little. Why to be stuck in a rut? But no point complaining becos even in India she is stuck in a Sabya rut. Like I said, its not bad… but I think she is capable of so much more with that gorgeous classic face of hers and fab curves.

  15. She looks gorgeous but then she is a gorgeous lady anyway. However, it’s getting a tad boring now. And I don’t like the sari or care much for nathnis.

  16. Cringeworthy. Viday looks bigger than she is and neither the blouse, jewellery not the nose ring is doing anything for her. Why Why why such a beautiful face has to look like this.Wish Vidya had made the appearance she made on Koffee with Karan with Rani in a red saree. She looked so elegant and sexy.

  17. I enjoying watching her movies, and I think Vidya Balan is a great actress. However, unfortunately her choice of outfits, jewelry, and hairstyle at Cannes, so far has been disappointing to this fan. I hope in the remaining days at this event, Vidya does something bold in her fashion styling, as she does so effectively in her movie roles.

  18. OMG, what is this sudden fascination with these huge nose rings? The close neck blouse looks somewhat suffocating. I wish she had kept it simple. May be it was a requirement in the Memo that was sent out to the Indian Cannes invitees?

  19. At first glance was thrilled to see Vidya rock the red and the pop of blue accessory, but upon a second look the high neck blouse style doing no favors and the really out of place (adding no contrast appeal) nose ring is such a kill joy! A little less matron, and channeling a bit more allure which Vidya can easily do would be a sight to see.

  20. I HATE HATE HATE that nose ring. This isn’t jodhaa Akbar. It looks ugly and like something dripping from her nose and is so obtrusive. Something small and sparkly would’ve been a nice touch. I hope they abandon this nose ring look. Yuck!!!

  21. She looks older than her actual age…it’s getting very monotonous …..she should stop endorsing aswel as modelling for sabyasacchi…her clothes are very voluminous ,which in return makes her look stout and grandmaesque

  22. She should have worn a half sleeve blouse with this saree. Here, the huge nath and the high necked blouse dont go well together. But otherwise, she looks good.

  23. Bravo to VB for not only staying true to her comfort zone and in the bargain looking fabulous. The Cannes film festivel is one of those occasions where one should be a little OTT. I just love love the nose ring on her and the worn by sonam. A small piece of jewelry but one that has made both of them totally stand out, you can see the photographers zooming their lenses on both of them. Also thank God that she is wearing her hair pulled back, it is rainy and humid in Paris, no matter how she blow dried her hair it would become frizzy in a minute. Two thumbs up to sabyasachi

  31. Want to add Vidya looks amazing but could have done without the embellishments on the sleeves. Also the blue beads detract from her presentation. As Coco said, look in the mirror before you go out and take one thing off.

  32. I cannot believe this is a Sabyasachi creation…the saree is awful and looks like a cheap mismatch of lace and fabric… the colors are so dull and lackluster. to top it off whoever has styled her has totally drowned out the classy element. i am all about mixing in surprises with the accessories but the blue in teh necklace is not picked up anywhere in the outfit…leaves it hanging there in the middle!! The nath is another issue altogether. Does not go with the style of the saree, nor the occasion. To top all that off, her hair is too severe and harsh… if this was a runway, i can understand Sabyasachi wanting to mix things up a bit but here I think he has gone too far! Vidya, pay attention to what you are asked to wear…its finally a relfection of you and not the designer!!
