The Classics

Fashion and movies have gone hand-in-hand, sometimes to have given us icons and at others, iconic moments…

I have always loved the black-white-and-grey of movies as well as the effusive Eastman color. And all that came with it. Impeccable style being one. Katherine Hepburn, Liz taylor, Dorris Day, Grace Kelly, they all had IT but that’s for a follow-up post… For now though, here are some of my favorite snapshots of Audrey Hepburn movies that her friend and designer of choice Hubert Givenchy played a leading role in.

Sabrina (a movie I love) was the movie it all began with, the association between Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn. The strapless ball-gown that Audrey wears in the movie after returning from Paris was designed by the Couturier and is one of my favorites. He later went on to design most of her costumes… A fortuitous meeting during the course of a shoot that led to a lifelong association and friendship between a soon-to-become style icon and a then young couturier!

Audrey Hepburn’s understated style and quiet sophistication/elegance remain uncontested. You haven’t forgotten the opening sequence of the movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s, have you? Givenchy and she, the dream-team!

And speaking of movies I love… Funny Face. Love it so much.

The all black look of Hepburn’s (from the movie) in cropped pants, black top and ballet flats inspired so many looks and was instantly memorable. Remember the Gap ad?

But, what I really loved were those Givenchy gowns. Swoon. The Givenchy wedding dress that she wears towards the end of the movie was just plain something else!

If you haven’t seen the movie, you must. In fact, go on and see all three (again)… so fun. I know I want to.

I will leave you with this really fun clip and even more fun song from Funny Face… Pay attention to the lyrics, it’s bound to make you smile.

  1. YAYAYAYAY! I love Audrey and old Hollywood :)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is my absolute favorite movie (for more than superficial reasons I assure you- I see too much of myself in Holy Golightly), but I love her in Roman Holiday almost as much.

Audrey Hepburn was just a truly beautiful, elegant person. Inside and out. Are you doing more of these? GRACE KELLY IS MY FAVORITE/STYLE IDOL. Just so you know ;) Do Liz Taylor too, no one could pull off OTT like that lady. And all of those dresses in Cleopatra! Drool. Worthy.

(Oh, I just reread your intro to this. Okay then. But what about the 30’s and 40’s actresses. Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh? Can you tell how excited I am, haha. Oh, and do some ofr old Indian films as well please. I love those just as much.)

  2. PnP this is the most loved post of mine in HHC. Being a true admirer of Old classic BnW movies (for which I have faced a lot of criticism). I truly loved the way old movies were, so classy, so beautiful and so elegant. Audrey’s movies tops my chart too, Roman Holiday being my fav.

Sabrina- Great movie again. Sometimes I wish I was born in that era somewhere in Rome lol. But ya only for sometime ;)

    • MANGOgrl – why do you face criticism for admiring old classic movies? It’s probably from pseudo-cool people who have no in-depth knowledge of anything.. I love classics – indian and western, print and film :-) Well, i think you’ll find lots of us here that share your passion:-)

  3. While Givenchy gave us our beloved Audrey in the black dress with pearls her wardrobe and look became trite. Audrey did branch out and boy did she in Two for the Road. Her looks were radical, fun and daringly classy!

  4. It remains my favourite movie of Audrey’s for the innovative film making, Albert Finney and most importantly for Audrey achieving the the third element in the trifecta of fashion : lines, co-ordination and ADVENTURE!

  7. An angel!! What a class act! Audrey Hepburn was/is still the most beautiful woman in the world – and not just in terms of looks. She had the most beautiful heart as well. And a great actress.
She could look fashionable and classy even in a pixie outfit.

    Givenchy & she created magic.

A cherished post this will be….
