In Manav Gangwani

Also in Manav Gangwani was Sophie who doesn’t usually go wrong with her appearances but this rather risqué gown was one of those rare misses from her.

Mallika Sherawat must be bummed that she didn’t get to wear this gown instead.

  1. oh godd….this gown looks like a cheap attempt to show off her body…hate it!!!
She’s trying to copy hollywood stars….Sophie, its not working!!

  2. Now why would someone do that. Especially with Horrible flat limp curls in their hair. Honestly the bottom of the gown in so pretty if the top half had some more coverage with some delicate skin show it couldve come out elegant. Provided the hair was done better. She didn’t have to be so in your face naked. eww!!

  3. while this is similar to what Halle wore, it ain’t a rip off, i find this one way more beautiful and even a little more risqué, kudos to her for wearing it and looking so comfortable and just because she wore sth that doesn’t go well with the typical desi mindset doesn’t mean she is copying hollywood…..my only issue is the hair and the make up that could have been sassier to go with the overall appeal

  4. I think m d only one here, who, but one quiet like dis daring or risqué appearance of her….i don’t know…but some how, i can not relate it to cheapness ! its sum thing dat most of the celebs won’t even try to dare…kudos 2 her, for attempting the gown !

  5. i feel she’s trying to have a ‘jlo green dress’ moment. sadly for her it hasn’t worked out like that. i don’t think this was the right moment for her to go all risque.

  6. Oh My….. (the way Muriel says it in “courage the cowardly dog cartoons)…… its risky….. i wonder if its going to start a new level of skin show among the celebrities now…

  7. Oh lordy lordy. I think if those “wings” that are covering her breasts were extended down to meet so that her navel was covered, it could have gone from trashy to sexy. Maybe. Too much skin show at this point.

  8. Well, thanks for leaving nothing to the imagination Sophie. That’s just a nasty dress, she’s too naked for my liking. Stop ripping of Hollywood, people!

    • She is wearing a dress…please explain how that is naked? And I dont see how you can rip off Hollywood fashion, its just natural that it would be a source of inspiration to celebs everywhere else

  9. It *is* a (bad) copy of the Elie Saab gown Halle Berry wore the year she won the Oscar. except that dress was tasteful and amazingly well crafted. the burgundy/wine color was classy and the embroidery on the bodice was elegantly done w/o making her seem in-your-face naked. Sophie looks great neck-up but that gown is really tacky. even the sequin embroidery on the chest area isn’t done well! I dunno why celebs continue to wear Gangwani “creations”!

  10. I love th bottom half of this gown. I have no porblem with risque outfits provided they look sophisticated-sexy, but sadly, this does not. If only the black bits had covered her breasts completely, I know she would have totally been able to work it, even with all the rest of the skinshow. She has pulled off sultry looks before

I dont mind the gown on sophie at all. I think she carries it pretty well. And i kind of..errr like it. Though i am seriously curious how the back looks like.

  12. I may be in the minority here. But I actually like the dress. Its bold. And hey having a great body is hard work! So if you got it, why not flaunt it?

  13. tsk tsk…I expression on Neil’s face says it all…:-p…he has ‘hope-mom-does-not-see-me-with-her’ expression :-D

  14. Inappropriately dressed for a conservative country like Sri Lanka. A little disrepectable too. However, must admit she has a great body.

    • i agree. it’s disrespectful for her to dress like this in a conservative and war – torn country. it would have gone down better in mumbai where, lets face it, kuch bi chalta hai.

  15. It takes a lot of guts and confidence to wear a gown like this which Sophie has clearly shown what is nice is that she never looks cheap and carries the dress with elegance. Well done Sophie…with Bollywood babes in bikinis galore on the big screen and photo shoots are we still in a time warp?

  16. thats a lot of boob and belly for live televised event. an actor can be as “barely dressed” as she wants, but she should show some awareness of the fact that the IIFA movie awards is a family show.

    • Most ‘family’ bollywood movies have way more scantily clad women. And sleazy cinematography to accompany it. Lets not be hypocritical

  17. I always think sophie tries to be like kim-kardashin-ish…
anyhoo…I think the gown should have supported her gurls better and if it was not sooooo transparent (similar to her skin tone, but not really showing any lines)she could have pulled it off.

  18. I don’t mind it.. cause I’m not going to start having double standards by saying it’s okay for desi celebs to wear something while rest of the world wear something else. If they’re going to wear western then I can take the amount of skin show.

I think the shape of the dress is pretty but the amount of black on the boobage needs to be more.. not because I want to decrease the skin show but because it cuts her off in places that make it less flattering.

I think the black covering is pretty but the top half looks bare. We might have had a more detailed sleeve or a more asymmetrical line on the neck with more of the black piping.

  19. i think….she looks pretty in the gown…. its not at all cheap….the way she carries it…. so elegant…… make up and hair are good but not for this dress…. over all she looks good and not at all tacky at least…. one being Indian may not consciously appreciate this look….. but she has made an effort and it has payed……

    • I know ! I am quite stumped as to why people are labeling it trashy or cheap just because it takes inspiration from the Halle Berry gown. To me this attitude reeks of our “the gora does it better” complex. Secondly we have all seen celebs in eastern wear like Saris reveal far more cleavage. This is a lot more tame and sophisticated in comparison.

      • well said…i dont understand how halle did it better than sophie!! i quite appreciate the look purely by the sartorial quotient. now whether its appropriate or not is another tangent altogether

  20. does not leave too much for the imagination… seem to have forgotten the saying that goes by “less is more”.. the result here is plain trashy, wish it covered a little bit more of her body

  21. Yes it is a daring outfit and yes maybe a bit more embroidery on the top half would have looked better but i think she looks amazing and manages to carry it off with a lot of ease and confidence. How come you all have such double standards? when liz hurley, j-lo even gwyneth, megan fox wear risque outfits, you guys never call them desperate so why label Sophie like that? She’s hot n enjoys flaunting it sometimes. Good for her!

    • Risque done well has it owns charm. A little bit of mystery is charming too, but its pretty regressive to expect women to play demure all the time. Im not saying this is a good example of sexy, but sexy can be glamorous and sophisticated

  23. This blog really makes interesting reading on one hand Bollywood wants to associate with Hollywood we want the world to see how India has progressed and is not labeled as a third world country any more…. we are not a country of snake charmers and kama sutra for the western world any more so then why do we indulge in double standards I ask? The fashion police questions if a celebrity god forbid repeats a dress or shoes but the reality is that things are only changing since the economic liberalization.. today we have international fashion houses eying India to explore their businesses and whether its dresses or shoes, bags which you term as lust list it is only recently that the awareness in India has happened and its only a privileged few who are in a position to buy these luxury brands …I really feel that Sophie did a fabulous job of wearing a gown which was a couture statement and I think the designer also has done a great job. Gowns are merely couture statements look what Ash wore at Cannes. I think we should applaud celebs who are trying to be edgy :)
