In Surily Goel
Although not quite a ‘Seeing Double’, how many of you see the 3.1 Phillip Lim inspiration in this Surily Goel dress on Sophie Chaudhary? (That and a touch of Jil Sander with the fringe sash.)

oh my!! I do see the similarity….or the inspiration… or the ‘loosely based on’ (as they call it these days!)
:)
it’s an almost shame to shame
Similar.. I’d actually pick the Surily Goel over the Phillip Lim
I like the Surily Goel version better… I don’ say i loved the dress but yeah.. Sophie is lookin’ lovely in it. Very opt make up.. Wish she’d gone for a golden clutch to break the ‘all black’ look.
It seems this is a theme in Surily’s clothes…”inspiration.”
you are being far too generous, payal – total copy! esp. since you consider that this is not a common style that one can say the “inspiration” is drawn from general fashion concepts. what is wrong with desi designers?!
whoa, whoa…no need to generalize them under one broad category, there are desi designers who don’t copy. Saying all of them do, because some of them do is just racist.
it’s not racist, first of all (maybe nationist). but, i think the problem in india, and this applies to many other countries, is that they are a bit removed from the international scene, so copying is more prevalent, simply because they can get away with it (i.e., there is less chance that it becomes known in the international fashion scene). so that wasn’t an attack on all desi designers, just one the ones who do.
@ ak: I get that you weren’t trying to be racist, I’m guessing that you’re probably Indian if you’re on this blog :)
It’s just that broad general statements like ‘what is wrong with desi designers?!’ on a post where one desi designer is caught plaigarizing sound racist, so maybe it could’ve been worded a little differently :) no offense
And I think your analysis about why they get away with copying is spot on.
Are you kidding…..so many of her ‘creations’ are very heavily ‘inspired’ by other designer’s work!!
I had loved the 3.1 Phillip Lim dress in white on Michelle Williams and even before I read your entire post, I knew I was looking at a rip off! This is not inspiration – this is a copy.
the make up and the dress don’t match. Pulled back hair with red lipstick would have been much more fierce. this lilac lipstick is so mismatched with the rest of the outfit. however, i never have great expectations from sophie.
It is obvious and I have seen some of her dresses worn by Priety Zinta that looked like copied. Sophie looks pretty though.
Gorgeous dress and Sophie looks lovely… this lady has got it right each time, where accessories are concerned!
soooo…surily goel si basically the “poor girl’s” version of all the super expensive designer wear that these stars don’t want to spring top dollar for?? her work is constantly “inspired” by a plethora of “internationsl” designers….shaaaaaaaaame!!!
shame on you.thats not INSPIRATION…its what i call a POOR copy.Im sooo glad HHC picks up on this stuff as the press in India….NEVER does!she knows a few actresses, copies stuff and dresses them, thats our Indian designers for you..!!
given that India has a million different problems from acute poverty and caste discrimination to female feoticide and corruption its hardly surprising that the press doesnt focus on fashion plaigarism (that cannot even be proven illegal anyway)
I absolutely agree that Surily and a lot of other designers plaigarize often and it is shameful and undignified BUT so many people on here blow the issue way, way out of proportion. We are a developing country with so many issues to tackle and this pales in front of them. This kind of coverage is much more suited to a blog like HHC than the mainstream media.
Obviously a lot of tabloids, magazines and supplements cover the fashion scene to attract readers, but if we’re talking investigative journalism, exposes and serious articles than shed awareness on malpractices, there are SO many more serious causes in India that desperately need media attention.
@Chocolate Martini … I am glad that there are some sensible people like you following this blog, and not everyone is just sitting on a high horse of fashion and being pretentious.
Woah….the pritam of fashion industry!!!
or india’s equivalent of abs
i hope the designer doesn’t get away with it. please let there be a lawsuit..(if there is one for acts like this)! and may it serve as an eye opener to any others who commit this crime! please..!
As soon as I saw Sophie Philip Lim immly came to mind :)
Even before I read the comment, I looked at it and thought..OMG Phillip Lim on a desi! Then I discovered what it was. People who copy like this should be shot, what an insult to Philip Lim.
I agree that it is an insult to Philip Lim and it’s disgraceful but please, this is getting a little melodramatic :)
Beats me why someone would copy such an ugly dress in the first place.
