In Anamika Khanna Couture

Comment image 105

For her second appearance on the red carpet, Sonam went desi picking a pale pink Anamika Khanna Couture design. The sari-inspired modern dress featured a sheer cape detail that showed off the blouse.

After the dramatic black Saab, this was a great way of doing a delicate yet dreamy look. A Ferragamo clutch and Jimmy Choo sandals finished out the all-pink look.

My only gripe is the necklace, a Sunita Kapoor design. The look did call for a choker but am not totally on board with this particular one.

Other than the necklace, again a minor gripe, love this look!

  1. I wish Anamika would design an actual Khara Dupatta for Sonam, and not this Sari-Dress-KharaDupatta fusion thing. Its decent. This silhouette just isnt working.

  3. Are you kidding, the necklace looks fab with her outfit. It’s really great to see desi wear on Sonam, as the “Indian” representative of L’Oreal. She looks fantastic from head to toe. That necklace is so drool worthy.

          • please people! when you look at a picasso’s original..do you judge it unfavorably because picasso was a bad husband or drunkard? You admire it because its a piece of art. Atleast she has a mind of her own and says what she wants. No matter what her personal opinions are about her peers – catty or kind – her outfit, style, the way she carries herself should be separate from her personal opinions – which frankly i feel are refreshingly different and honest among the pooh-poohing bollywood folks. Would you rather have a diplomatic icy-queen? Atleast, sonam keeps it real. and by the way, KWK – is meant to be catty and get everyone’s claws out. Dont fall for it.

    • I am glad someone is calling spade a spade. It is really difficult to be objective. It is really difficult for me to criticize or crib about what Vidya ,Konkana ,Zoya Akhtar is wearing coz I like there work ,I like them for who they are and I love their confidence .
You will see the same in PnP’s comment when it comes to Nandita Das which is kinda sweet because atleast sometimes you really want to see that women who have been good or best in their field not having to ultimately prove themselves on the fashion front coz it’s not “the” thing for all women (to be fashonista ,best dressed, sexy ,hot..)
Similarly it’s so difficult for me to appreciate Sonam and why should I when she is just out there to demean others and using the words like “Ugly” and sounding absolutely fake about ” doing lots and lots of Social work ” on a certain talk show.

    • Someone said that Sonam´s fashion reflects her personality, daring, out of the box & risk-taking. We mustn´t love everything she says or do: she is not a Sati Savitri & doesn´t claim to be one. Yall need too grow up, seriously. Coming to her posts just to post negativity is childish. Which is funny, because that´s what you guys accused her to be. If you have nothing nice to say, don´t say anything, it´s that simple. It´s tiring to see bitchiness disguised as criticism on indian forums all the time.
P&P post this please, thank you.

      • Wow! So she is entitled to her opinion and we are not(or as you said being bitchy about it)!?? That’s a bit unfair, dont you think? I think we all know who is being childish here!!! You like her and I respect your opinion but let’s just leave it that and not attack people for no reason. Also, its very difficult for any human being to be 100% objective, we are after all humans and not robots…

  4. Stunning – love love love this look of hers. More than her black Elie Saab. It is a tough look to pull off, but she is doing it with so much poise. Her make up and hair is on point. I wish she continues this good make up run when she returns back to India.

  7. Finally. Even though it’s almost like is it’s not Saab it’s an Anamika for Sonam. But this look has that wow facte that has been missing from her past appearances. And no, this still doesn’t make her an icon.

    Reply
    • *Wow factor. And please excuse the icon remark. In hindsight, shouldn’t have made it. I guess it’s time to cut her some slack for shooting off the lip in a chat show.

  8. I might be in the minority here after reading all the comments.. The outfit by itself is amazing however the whole look along with the have-to-look-stern facial expression just seems very gimmicky.

  9. She looks regal…So stunning…I am glad people are finally appreciating her and keeping their KWK biases aside…I waiting to see what Ash wears tomorrow…The international fashion critics loved her in Elie Saab and they liked this one too…Lovely representation from India and independent film festival like Cannes…The irony is most of them are not the best actors we have in India…

    • Good actors who go to Cannes for their films do not get their due. I mean it’s a freaking film festival; shouldn’t more weightage be attached to people who actually matter by doing amazing work in cinema? How many people really know that the team of Titli is at Cannes this year? (Rhetorical question, obviously)
I’m not comparing sonam to any of the actors, really. She is not there in that capacity and it’s fine. We all know that she has miles to go before that day arrives. But all these people saying that she makes India proud by looking stunning on the red carpet, baffle me. How does that make India proud? By showing off that stylists and make up artists can put together beautiful looks for her one after another? Merely being a Loreal ambassador, brings some sort of medal home for her and India ( and it’s not just her…I mean ash and Frieda too)?
I’m not being snarky. I would just like to understand better the psychology behind such national pride attached to her at Cannes.

      • She represents her country just by being very stylish. Having a L´Oreal representation for one´s country is very big, not every country has that.
We tend to forget that the West categorizes people in stereotypes. Actresses are judged by the visual impact more than the talent they have, especially @ festivals like Cannes. Unfortunate but true. Being the biggest film festival in the world, Cannes is glamour first, a place to sell the moviestar schtick, movies & Co, to make contacts & get one´s name out there. So every time someone from a certain place wows with great fashion choices, it helps to kill the prejudice against her people.
Aish did so before thanks to her amazing beauty, Sonam is doing so thanks to her amazing fashion. Vidya failed because her looks were drab, she wasn´t relatable.
You see that Cate Blanchett came out of hiding for this, Nicole Kidman is trying to save her film by premiering it there first, Jennifer Lawrence is doing photocalls for a movie that isn´t even finished yet. & they all do so while taking their fashion game very seriously, because it can make or break one´s appeal for movie producers & potential endorsement deals.
        sorry for the essay. :-)

        • Okay, there are so many things I don’t agree with here. So, I see your “essay” and I raise you my spiel ;)
I do not believe that actresses are judged by the visual impact they have more that their talent. That may be true when the brand sells them on magazines and such, but at a film festival like Cannes, one’s talent and contribution to cinema takes center stage. That is not to say that actresses will not bring the A-game as far as fashion is concerned on the red carpet. Of course they will. And they should, by all means. But when it comes to pretty faces in stunning clothes endorsing make-up products, it’s really just that. Nothing more. Not national pride, not representing Indian on a global platform. That’s all bullshit. And I’m not trying to demean people who do that. They are doing their job. But when things like national pride are attached to someone who is basically selling vanity in a foreign country, that is screwed up. Again, nothing wrong with vanity. Just the sentiments that are connected with it are all messed up.
Also, you can’t be serious when you say that “every time someone from a certain place wows with great fashion choices, it helps to kill the prejudice against her people.” That’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. What kind of prejudice has it helped kill, if you could elaborate a bit, please? I am sorry to burst your bubble, but the prejudices that India needs gone CANNOT be killed by someone with no real achievement to their name walking a red carpet in beautiful clothes. It will take much more than that.
And Vidya did not “fail”, by the way. She was on a jury, because she was recognized for her work in Indian cinema. One can critique her fashion choices, sure, but saying that she failed because a handful of people didn’t like what she wore is silly.
Lastly, by your logic, Sonam, Freida and Ash would all benefit in their movie careers because their amazing fashion choices would appeal to movie producers. That remains to bee seen but so far, I don’t think it has happened.

          • I’m rather late to this discussion, but my two cents. You are right in saying that pretty women walking the carpet in desginer gowns will not do anything for India’s pride or image, which is continually dented by the way the average woman is treated in our country. Open any international newspaper (especially Le Monde) and all you read about is rape, molestation, honour killings etc. My friends in France were shocked when they came to know that I was Indian as they couldn’t imagine an Indian woman being literate and unmarried.
However when they see women like me, like us and especially like these famous, well-dressed women, they know that all is not lost, there is a chance for the female human in India.

          • That being said, I don’t like this saree/dress/choli-fused thing. I guess I’m old-fashioned that way, I’d want my dress to be only one thing lol!

            Reply
      • I second you on that…May be it came of incorrectly but I wasn’t implying any national pride with sonam representing Loreal at Cannes….I was more sad on the irony of it…At the end of the day, the media ends up covering Sonam, Ash and Frieda as opposed to Titli or other indian films…Just a sad state of affairs..

      • If someone from India, looks stunning among a lot of other people, even if it is a film festival (remember films are first visual, everything else later), why wouldn’t it make India proud? As simple as that. If everyone was just there for great acting, it would get boring.
In that sense, we should not be proud of our several beauty queens also, because they are not really doing anything other than just being beautiful!

  11. She looks fabulous . Okay. BUT. We did hear Sonam saying she was going to promote Indian fashion on the international platform. So how is Elie Saab ( a Lebanese designer) promoting Indian fashion?? She has been repeating his designs this year as she did last year with Dolce and Gabbana. I think she wears whomever she is contracted to or she can scab clothes off. She has worn Anamika Khanna before so it’s no up and coming new designer nor is this draped sari anything that we haven’t seen new on Sonam. She needs to stop this crap of saying she promotes Indian fashion. Really, because she doesn’t. Why can’t she just admit she wears whoever will lend her the clothes. She does not have any exclusivity with any designer if she did she would be fashion forward. As for Elie Saab Aishwarya wore him first and looked great so Sonam needs to get her own style ( just like she advised Deepika on KWK) :) yeah Sonam you look good but do can everyone else these days so you’re no longer special but I fact really BORING ;)

  12. In the minority in all likelihood however plain odd. She lacks the spunk factor that would give this look the punch it requires. The makeup pales her. Don’t like. None of it is really that bad-she doesn’t work it IMO that’s all.

  14. She looks great at first glance. Her hair and makeup are perfect, and that choker is to die for. The concept of the outfit is interesting, but i’m not sure if it panned out the way it was intended…I’m confused about the bottom though, and the material that was used looks somewhat cheap. Overall definitely interesting, she makes it work.

  17. Loved the workmanship on the blouse and the sari/dress, the colour but the silhouette I feel is odd. It looks as though the person got the drape wrong.

But that’s minor coz the look worked amazingly. Loved the necklace, hair, makeup, choose and all else. Sonam had never looked better.

  20. I like it a lot especially the choker and the color and fabric of the gown. I have a minor gripe with her hair though, it looks too flat and gelled down and do not like the middle parting as it makes the face look wider.other than that i like it.

  21. ok, agreed she looks good. but one, i cant get past her “I’m an idol” statement, and second, waist down, its a bit too unruly for me.

  22. I for one, would beg to differ!
I think the net poncho thing looks out of place, and that the hair looked too sever with THIS outfit..
It works with the makeup and choker, but does not suit the silhouette.
and dont get me started on the Silhouette. It is so confused…Is it a saree? No, is it a jumpsuit, no.. Is it Indo-western…Maaaaaaybe..!!

I mean, makeup your mind already!
I expected much more from Sonam. I am sorry!
    Now, waiting eagerly for Ash!!

  25. First look I thought it was great. Then a second look and I don’t know. I just don’t dig that cape which looks like it could double as an umbrella just in case there was a Mary Poppins reboot. And that overly broad border snaking its way across is suddenly all you notice. It seems like a dress that can’t make up its mind between being whimsical and ornate. Or something for an Indian Barbie doll. Its a pity that very few saree drape variations actually look good. And I agree that the choker is all wrong for it.

I think the only reason it looks impressive at first is because it is on Sonam. Who minor gripes apart here looks good.

PS: I agree with the commenter above. Sure focus on the usual trip of Ash, Frida and Sonam but maybe also feature the people who are actually there for their film work? The National Awards ceremonies which are not Mumbai centric didn’t feature here either. Especially since this site is so reliant on film folk for its posts, its not exactly an on the street Sartorialist.

Ash, Karisma, Raveena, Kajol, Rani, Preity, Manisha, Kareena…name it they have said all kind of things! So…let’s move on from KWK! I think Sonam looks stunning here.
