In Elie Saab Couture

Hardly to anyone’s surprise, it was an Elie Saab Couture gown for Sonam while at Cannes. With her hair in a faux bob, stunning Chopard earrings and a bold lip finished out the look.

The ‘princess meets old world glam’ isn’t an aesthetic we are un-familiar with on Sonam. However, what lacks in novelty is more than made up by how well she works the look; she looked great. Love!

  1. The earrings don’t go with her gown at all.
Also, I don’t think that the gown is a great pick by her stylist. It’s way too pouffy and doesn’t look attractive/graceful the way it falls in some photos.
Her MUA finally got it right. Fresh and glamorous.

  2. I don’t know. I’m sort of on the fence about this one. Maybe it’s the expectations but as gorgeous as this gown looks, I was seriously hoping for something more. It sure is classy, but I would’ve loved to see her take us by surprise!

  3. Nah! Too black. Should have gone with some colour. She’s looking good but, to me, this appears to be a very night time event look.

    • Yes,it does reminds me of Aishwarya’s elie saab gown last year. That was also black in colour and had darker shade black flowers coming from top to bottom, without reaching the bottoms. The only difference is Sonam ‘s gown is cindrella type which Aishwarya ‘s gown was not so voluminous at the bottom. If anyone other than Sonam had worn the gown then people would have call it a ‘copied version’ but since it is Sonam , even copied or inspired versions become original for people.

  4. She looks adorable :) I think most of the time she just wins it by her radiant smile so it doesnt matter what she is wearing ! I love it!! :)

  5. She looks beyond stunning. Perfect head to toe!!!!

But im sure everyone on here is going to nitpick and find something wrong about this look too. ‘She looks so contrived’ etc haha :P

  6. Love the gown but the same, stupid pose is killing me now! If you’re conscious about your arms, wear something you’re comfortable in! She seems to be airing out her armpits in all these pictures!

  7. She def looks good but my jaw isn’t dropped by this look. I wish she had done a high slit chiffon dress look similar to Blake Lively’s burgundy Gucci look. I’m pretty bored of her poofy, dramatic dresses no matter how gorgeous they are. A pretty safe and tamed pick coming from Bollywood’s resident “fashionista.”

  8. She looks real good in the up close shot. Finally, the make-up is good and not ashy-white washed. The gown is a mess to look at from the back. It must have been quite a task to walk with all that fabric everywhere. :O

  9. What’s going on with her eyebrows? They look like caterpillars… The gown is too voluminous and is not uniformly so and hence looks weird..

  10. Not even a single photographer is interested in Sonam. Like last year she’s gonna make it to worst dressed list in European press

  11. I hope there’s no side cleavage action. The fit of the gown makes her look broader (to put in a I-hope-this-comment-gets-approved kinda way.)

  12. The expression on her face reads ‘yay! I am overjoyed , I live for this, wear fancy gowns, do makeup, hair and parade around ‘ that said the gown is beautiful and she looks lovely.

  13. I’m sorry but I really dont love this look- I thought Freida looked better then her despite the court shoes! I dont know if its the hair or because a black gown just doesn’t have that WoW factor when seen in pictures, The gown on its own is amazing but I think the hair and makeup are a let down tonight.

Sonam is known 4 her style n experiments wid styles which always r nailed by her but here it is disturbing to c her shoulder n below side chest thing it just pops out like bones….d gown is beautiful but not 4 her. 15. The ‘teapot’ stance is so irritating. She tried to pull of the Dita Von Teese hair look but somehow it seems off. A side low chignon would have looked classier IMO.

  16. Ok as annoyed as I am by Sonam’s comments on KWK and as much as I dislike her usual costume-y approach to clothes (non-Indian clothes) I feel like people are just complaining for the sake of complaining lol. I don’t think others would be scrutinized to the same extent for the same outfit. But I guess she kind of asked for it? Anywho, I think she looks great here. Love her makeup for once and while I’m not keen on the puffiness, it looks fine on her. Hair is great, so is the jewellery and honestly Sonam Kapoor’s smile is probably the best thing about her and I’m so glad she doesn’t stand around pouting all day.

Also, this is unrelated but can we please see Mindy Kaling featured on this page more P&P? I think she has a very unique sense of fashion and she would add a lot to this page.

    Thanks! :)

  17. She looks good but the point is I am bored seeing her do this look. There is no novelty in this and I don’t think how she Carries it makes up for the lack of novelty.

  18. Seriously hate her signature dumb pose all the time!! We know that her arms aren’t so slim and she thinks this helps but it looks ridiculous posing like that constantly.

    • Seriously though, what else is she meant to do with her arms? I mean it’s awkward as it is to pose on the red carpet, you don’t know what to do wth yourself unless you’re with someone or holding something. And she couldn’t just rest her arms on the poofy dress… so what is she suppposed to do?!

  19. Oh please stop with the nitpicking people….this is Cannes and the gown is gorgeous. Sonam looks stunning…make-up, hair and those earrings go so well with the outfit. I think a lot of critiques didn’t expect her to look this good.

    • too black .. what exactly is too black if I may ask? It is a black dress with black bead work / embroidery and nude lining .. where do you expect the color and how? .. a belt, or piping .. I don’t get it! She added color by way of her lips.. Isn’t this nitpicking?

  20. The gown reminds of Sridevi’s Oscar de la Renta for IIFA where she was looking jaw-droppingly stunning and gorgeous…
Sonam – Hair and makeup look good but the dress Nah!

  21. Her make- up looks good, good close- up. Dress is predictable and her look overall is nothing to write home about.
But is this seriously all what India’s “self- proclaimed fashionista” has got? .

  22. The gown is not working on her, the colour is wrong for her and it looks too overwhelming. Freida’s Michael Kors gown has been the best look from any indian this time at Cannes.

  23. I always get a little-girl-playing-dress-up vibe from Sonam. Her ‘looks’ don’t seem very organic but end up being costume-y and caricature-ish. Would love to see her in something that she feels comfortable in, being 100% herself without feeling this obvious need to prove something.

  24. I request Highheelconfidential to please make a separate post comparing:
    1) Aishwarya’s black Elie saab gown at Cannes 2013
    2) Sridev’s black oscar de la renta gown at IIFA 2014,and
    3) Sonam’s black Elie saab gown at Cannes 2014
All the three dresses are so familiar yet each look good.

  25. Girls what is with the negative comments??!! You do realize that she is at cannes..right..not filmfare awards..cannes calls for old world glamour not “colourful” fun stuff.
I think she looks absolutely fab!
Maybe you need to look at aishwarya rai to bring some bollywood haha :)

  26. Sonam should leave the thick eyebrows to Deepika who can actually carry it off. Thank goodness for the non-whitened make-up though!

Otherwise the dress is charming, even though her pose is contrived.

  27. She looks amazing. Cant fault this look. People are just complaining because of the stuff she said on Koffee with karan. But whatever! She looks beautiful and flawless. She’s the best dressed. Yes, definitely. This gown would not have looked as good on any other Indian actress.

  28. I think she looks stunning. And truly happy to be there which just adds to her prettiness.

I have already seen her being mentioned on a lot of american blogs as one of the best dressed people in cannes. Mostly it’s comments like “I don’t know who that girl is but she is beautiful and I love her dress.”

Also, it would be nice for once to have an Indian face at an international event that actually has some Indian support. Why are we so hellbent on pulling everyone down? First it was Aishwarya who got all the flak, then Freida, now Sonam.

    • Elie Saab Haute Couture is based in Paris, so I imagine the dress was flown down to the L´ Oreal suite. Now for normal folks idk how they would travel withit! :-)

  29. I love the gown and even if the skirt is poofy as has been mentioned earlier , I feel that Sonam pulls this off. She looks elegant, classy, and I do strongly agree that she is wearing something which is very event appropriate. In the past actresses have done more colorful and seemingly bollywood style while at Cannes, but I am more on the side where youare dressed more according to the global aura of the event..I will say Sonam gets it right.

  30. pretty face, but the dress makes her look like one of thos dolls old ladies keep in the bathroom. The ones where the skirt covers up an extra roll of toilet paper.

  31. +1 for this Elie Saab dress and -1 for Sonam’s look. I don’t understand what makes the designer put on that pathetic earring. It is not going with the outfit in anyway. Overall, the design looks pretty amazing and so is the smile.
