In Black And White

Waist up, I love it. The sheer balloon sleeved shirt I’d wear in a heart-beat and though not into Leiber minaudieres, love this one… but as for the look in it’s entirety goes, this one was a damp squib. The pants are just not working on Ms. Kapoor and as on-the-trend the brogues may be, it too is something that isn’t quite working on her.

Update: Thanks ‘Anu’ for the ID and ‘Aarthi’ for finding the lowest price one. ;)

  1. She is losing the plot.. trying too bloody hard… Chill girl, every day doesnt have to be fancy dress up! The hair looks like an owl landed on her head and flew off… Sonam tried too hard to dress to impress.. to make a statement.. normal isnt bad u know!

  2. I guess iam playing an old record! But too much of Olsen twins inspiration on almost every look of hers. Though she is the only one who can carry it well.

    • Also, Are these the same pants and shoes she was wearing while traveliing at mumbai airport ( in one of the old posts). she looked gorgeous there.

  3. I like the shirt. I like the pants too. The only thing I don’t like is where the ‘girls’ are at. I mean, halfway down your chest when you’re in your 20s? Tut, tut.

    Reply
    • Not really halfway down considering the pants are so high up. They’d have looked fine had she been wearing a regular/low-cut pair of jeans.

    • @ Tongue in Chic: no offense, but this is a fashion blog, not a ‘make catty comments about various parts of stars anatomies’ blog

Criticizing Sonam’s outfit? Understandable. Targeting the poor girl’s supposedly sagging chest? Not kosher.

Again, sorry if I offended you

      • No offense CM…but that IS fashion sense..wearing a good bra IS fashion sense….now if someone said ‘her fingers have bad skin..or her eyes are too small’ or something like that…thats criticizing something not related to fashions…but comments abt how the lack of a good bra is making her chest look bad…totally acceptable….( and no offence but a lot of times I actually find your comments have a ‘tone’ to them …and are catty twds other bloggers….you do know that ppl have a right to their opinion right? )

        None taken. :)
I have to say I completely disagree with you though. Bad support ruins fantastic outfits. I need hardly point out that this is what I was implying.
Good innerwear is essential to your look, and certainly comment-worthy on a fashion blog.

        • just to clarify: I was not talking about her criticizing the lingerie. Maybe I misunderstood tongue in chic’s comment but there was no mention of lingerie just how her ‘girls’ are half way down her chest although she’s only in her 20’s. To me that sounded more like a comment on her natural anatomy than her choice of bra.

Again, I might have misinterpreted the comment and if I did, I’m sorry.

@ SS: any ‘tone’ your getting is completely unintended. On my comment to tongue in chic I apologized AND said that I did not intend any offense. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that’s the point: I am entitled to my own opinion as well and that opinion includes disagreeing with other’s opinions. If you want to disagree with me, that’s YOUR opinion and you are welcome to it.

          • I think its pretty obvious she was talking about lingerie…I mean, you don’t have to explicitly spell out EVERYTHING, do you? That would be so clinical. :)

And I kind of agree with ‘SS’ about the ‘tone’. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but some of your comments directed at others opinions can be a little unnecessarily grating. This is a fashion blog, and a little bit of playful exaggeration never hurt anyone. Lets all just take it easy. :)

  4. i actually like it waist up and waist down but separately, not together.
she has the long legs to carry off the high pants and brogues. as for the blouse it’s nice although i would never wear it myself.
i feel that this look might have looked better in person and not so much in pics.

    • exactly the same thought here! every time she has these shoes on, it reminds me of R.K.; for me its the song ‘mere joota hai….. the top is nice but the bottom is not; coz of the shoes maybe.

  5. there’s not one bit of her outfit that I like. even the top…. makes her look so saggy. blouse, pants, shoes, hair… everything. total disaster.

  6. I am getting really bored of her… Sad but true… She really is trying toooo hard.. I think she should just chill and dress like a normal young kid for a change, sans the make up and the ‘i have to have a new hairstyle everytime i step out’ look.

    Reply
    • If someone dresses like a normal kid then she is boring and uninteresting, if someone dresses differrently it is “trying too hard”, if someone dresses in ethnic wear always it’s ‘behenji”. What can the girls in Bollywood do to satisfy people especially when these girls have to make so many public appearances?

      Reply
      • OMG u said it. I feel the same way. She looks alright to me. I don’t understand the trying too hard part too. I think she dresses that way because she likes to be trendy.

        Reply
      • No, its just that we’re telling her to just relax and stop trying to be EDGY or whatever ALL.THE.TIME… We appreciate the effort, but everytime you dress like this, it seems like you’re screaming “LOOK! Im eccentric!”
        Then it gets annoying.

        Reply
        • @ Jazz: since when is a balloon sleeved shirt and a pair of brogues ‘eccentric’ . She’s just on-trend, I wish people wouldnt be so melodramatic and criticize EVERYTHING

          @ HHC fan: totally agree

          Reply
          • The shirt may not be eccentric by itself, thus the ‘waist up she looks good’ I guess ;-) But hey, u pair it with those shoes + those pants (certainly not conventional, right?? Not conventional = eccentric, right?? ) :P

            Reply
          • @ jazz: actual both Balloon sleeves and brogues are on trend in western runways right now, so it’s not too unconventional in fact its the opposite: she’s actually following the fashion trends for the moment.

Also, unconventional is just uncommon (surely given the usual state of B’wood fashion, her being unconventional by B’wood norms is a GOOD thing :P), while eccentric is more odd or radical :) (Sorry for sounding like a dictionary)
BTW: incase you were getting a ’tone’ from my comments, I did not intend to be insulting or snarky, no offense :)

      • i do not see why you should be so sympathetic towards celebs. oh poor stars with their BIG FAT BANK BALANCE, DESIGNER WEAR, STYLISTS, MAKE-UP ARTISTS AND HAIRSTYLISTS ? gimme a break ! i do not mean to sound offensive but if they have all these resouces and help at their disposal they better get it right, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

        • Agree, marky. It’s also ridiculous when some people include this argument of —oh we all know that they can afford it as though that makes it okay for them to show up in WTHey clothes or faux designer stuff. Even if u don’t have it in you, just hire a stylist.

          Reply
    • Omgosh, I agree, ANTS!
It’s getting so annoying now- she has to have new and ‘different’ clothes, new hairstyles, tons of makeup and what not each time I see her pictures. There’s nothing spontaneous about her look anymore.. especially after that whole Audi show debacle, like girl, chill. Your life isn’t some fashion show, dress normal and your age.

  7. I know what everyone means by the trying too hard comments – she really, really wants to be seen as ‘high fashion’ , and while shes got the height and quirky beauty to pull it off, shes certainly no Kate moss who makes it seem effortless.

    • umm..why must people compare Sonam to international super models all the time? Relax guys! this isnt a contest!!and atleast she’s never been guilty of popularizing anorexia

      Reply
      • @ Chocolate Martini: You hit the nail right on the head – it’s the “build ’em up and then tear ’em down” syndrome. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes (Kate Moss does it pretty often actually :p).

  9. I LOVE that Stella McCartney organza silk blouse!!!!!

…and I think she pulls it off quite well! As for the rest of the look, I think she pulled that off well too. (Maybe low waisted pants might have been a tad better though.

  10. Ahh so much HATING going on here. Chill guys!

Love the look from waist upwards, not too fond of the pants and the shoes though. Saying that, Kudos to her for trying and making it work. The girl has style..

  11. I wish people would stop judging the poor girl so harshly: because that’s all she really is, a girl who is trying to live up to the media-given image of fashionista because it is her only claim to fame considering that both her movies have flopped. Sure it’s contrived, but its her only claim to fame and she IS in the fame game.

All of this judging and scorn is starting to get a little ugly. I think most people take each of her outfits too personally because they are each trying to prove a point through her, either that Sonam is on par with international fashionistas and that India is capable of producing people whose style can be appreciated globally or that Sonam has no clue when it comes to the international fashion scene and that Indian fashion scene has a long, long way to go before it reaches there

Either way, even if she is a little wannabe, she’s just a fun change from the rest of the Manish and Tarun addicts on this site and I’ll take her very perosnal (if sometimes naive and flawed) approach to fashion over the cold, impersonal, generically perfect, stylist-manufactured fashion sense of Frieda and her hollywood starlet ilk

  12. I cant see how most Indian women would accept a pair of brogues on a woman,I for one love em…
just not with this look..i think the pants are not the problem the fact that she doesnt have killer shoes is..

  13. I completely agree with P&P’s assessment. She looks gorgeous top half….not so much waist down. Like the shirt and the face & hair. But the pants and shoes…not working. And I am sure she looked stunning face to face….I hear that a lot about this girl when she goes wrong with her clothes!

  15. saw pics of the event and i must say she looks so very different from the other ladies. and that for me is the name of the game. she is one/many step ahead of the others in fashion and style. contrived or not.
and when you see her standing next to the others you can tell she’s class apart. so not run of the mill and just for that i give her full marks.

  18. I personally dont like harem pants and bubble/balloon sleeves.
She is dresses up like old ladies dress up in UK or US.
She thinks dressing up latest makes you fashionista and whether it suits you or not.
Some one here said ‘confidence ‘ ,i think its more of proud…Kareena and sonam give same looks.. like no one can beat them.

  19. I feel like a lot of people are taking this a bit TOO seriously. Some of the comments are starting to sound a little melodramatic and, well, fiilmy.
She tired to look parisian-chic, she ended up looking like a bit of a mess. It’s fixable. I appreciate Sonam for trying, but (excuse the comparison) someone like Diane Kruger could have pulled it off. It’s all in the expression- the vibe- the confidence.
Sonam is a little ungraceful for the look she often tries to pull off- but she has time.

I just love how this girl experiments – you can tell how passionate she is about fashion.

  21. She is certainly making an extra attempt for the “design” on the clutch to be seen. Don’t know how it goes with the entire outfit. Ah well, she is the fashionista here..I will just shut up :)

  22. balloon shirt and some pants…do NOT look like “trying too hard” from any angle. some people are just being too harsh on the girl.
She wears what she likes to wear.

Anyways, I agree with whatever PnP said, top half is good. I don’t like the clutch with this look.

  23. Don’t be hatin’, people. She looks alright. How did this wannabe/tries-too-hard image crop up? She has an effortless style and grace for her age and experience. And she manages to look good nearly all the time.

  24. i love love love the top but yaa i do think that she is trying her hardest to fulfill her media image.. i mean come on those pants..seriously? they are unflattering..wear something cuz you feel it looks good not just because its “in style”… i like that she changes up things and keeps it fun but i think this look is a bit forced!
and the clutch is not going together with this look AT ALL..just doesnt fit

  25. Honestly people always hate others that have been put on a pedastal. It’s not Sonam’s fault that she has the “fashionista” tag attached to her nor is it like Aishwarya’s fault that she has a beauty label attached to her. We always judge these guys harder when they have some sort of label attached to them and it’s really no fault of their own.

I like this look of Sonam’s but I think it’s better suited for “once in a while”. Most of her events lately she’s had a twist on classics thing going on.. very prim and proper. Would love to see her more boho chic.. I think it would do her good to look a little more youthful as that is something that she has going for her as opposed to other actresses…and she won’t have it for long so might as well rock it now!

  26. Oh my my…..it is an almost-there chic parisian belle look….went a lil wrong but not as bad as some of the comments here seem to suggest….but what is off??lemme think….im not feeling too artculate this morning….i think something about the way she is posing….a lil less stiff, head thrown back n a dazzling smile(it looks kind of tired here)would have done the trick…..

  27. I would change the fit of the panys and keep the shoes. But she works the look… this girl has IT. Thanks God someone is “trying’ to be a bit different and stylish and not just wearing one stupid velvet lined kurta/saree with tassels. Way to go girl!! Keep experimenting

      • I dont mean to sound mean or sarcastic PnP, but I have seen several personal (botox) and disrespectful (ugly) comments on Aishwarya , Rani and Vidya posts. They stay put there until someone points them out to you, after which of course you disapprove them. Why are you so lenient then, when you are being so strict for sonam posts? no fair

        • hira,
The comments that did get unapproved were the ones where posters were getting disrespectful/offensive towards each other. It is common to see someone say something harmless and it being misconstrued and that leading to a chain that just gets worse with each comment. That was the case here. We try to do our best in comment moderation. Yes, some slip by when there are 100+ comments to approve every morning. We are human too. :)

        • We removed all that were part of the particular thread. Good points are not, the moment one gets personal and derides another, we just have to remove all in the thread to be fair. It may seem unfair to those who aren’t at fault, but we’ve got to draw the line somewhere.

  29. I can’t believe those of you who approved of this outfit. She looks terrible. The top’s nice but the pants and the shoes ruin it. I am disappointed because I hold her to pretty high standards compared to others. To those of you who were making comments on her chest being low or whatever, hello, are you blind, the pants waist is high. Your tits would look saggy too if you pulled your pants/skirt that high. And let’s not forget she’s normally got less than ideal posture- that can also give the illusion of sagging. I just realized those are hunting pants. She’s missing the frock, a shotgun and a little dog lololol.
