Seeing Double

Unless we missed the ‘Nandita Mahtani For Sir Alistair Rai’ press release, the uncanny similarity between the two is pretty discomforting!

Update: Perhaps I should have been clearer… Nandita’s collection came first!

  1. What an absolute disgrace!! Can someone please tell me how these imposters get away with this!! Surely the boards and committees of the various fashion councils who put on the fashion weeks should take strong action against these frauds and plagiarists. Shocking!

  2. Well, whoever it’s by I absolutely love it! And I would personally love a shorter version of it since I can’t do long dresses too well. Like it! I acn’t tell if the runway version is exactly the same as the one in the catalog but I like the tie die feel of the stripes as versus the perfectly aligned stripes on the runway.

  3. actually, based on pure chronology didn’t nandita’s collection come before sir alistair’s? the autumn winter 2008 collection must’ve been shown sometime early 2008 while the 2009 catalog would’ve been shot sometime in the summer of 2008 at the very earliest. although i think there have been instances int eh past where nandita has blatantly plagiarised from international designers, i hopw this is not one of those instances where she actually copied from a homegrown designer!!

  4. I was thinking the same thing when I saw the Nandita Mahtani dress in an earlier Vogue India issue a few months ago. I swore that she was copying Sir Alistair Rai. However, I like Sir Alistair Rai dress much better!

  5. I guess this is karma haha, she is just as guilty for doing it to ohers so I have no sympath for her.

Nonetheless this is dirty play, and as I said before these ‘designers’ should be humiliated on a public forum.

  6. i like the nandita mahtani version much better. the stripes are darker, bolder, and are at an angle instead of straight across so it looks prettier.

  8. OMG people! It SAYS that Nandita’s collection came before Sir Alistair Rai’s!!! WHy do you just assume she plaigarized? Because she’s Indian and Kiran Rai is an american designer? God, only we can discriminate against ourselves!!!

That said, Im devastated. I LOVE Kiran Rai’s scarfs and I own most of them: love, karma, kismet and peace. I cant believe she would do this!!!

I don’t know who made it first but who ever copied it needs to sell those on the street markets where you get fake everything and not at a designer’s boutique.
So, what’s the deal ? Nobody interviews these people ? No body questions them on how their inspiration is literally the original itself. Or do they think ” Aah, I don’t think anyone will notice it” . Its a small world that’s getting smaller.

This kinda blatant plagiarism will only ruin the designers reputation. Next time she or he makes something fabulous, people will look for a ” inspiration” whether there’s one or not.
