Sharmila At Cannes: A First Look

Comment image 54

The 2009 Cannes Film Festival started today beginning with a photocall of the jury members that includes the lovely Sharmila Tagore. For the photocall, Sharmila picked a light chiffon floral yellow sari that was quite event appropriate but I wish she had just picked a plain yellow chiffon sari over the printed one. I think it would have stood out more.

  2. i think she looks lovely. It is clear that she has a style of her own..and i prefer the printed one because ever since the 90’s the solid chiffon sarees have been so in vogue that there is no uniqueness to it. In choosing the printed one, Sharmila actually stand out more. She totally reminds me of my mom in these photos!

  6. @Ratan: Her daughter is an adult who has her own personality. She is not going to be a copy of her Mom good or bad.

Sharmila Tagore looks very nice. The print is nice.

  8. She should be offered to do the ads for timeless elegant watches, or is she already in it? I cannot forget her rice commercial, more than the rice, it’s her I think light green sari and her hectagonal shaped watch she’s wearing in that ad.

  10. my goodness she looks younger than robin wright Penn! What does she do to remain so young and fresh? I’m sure it’s not the fair n lovely cream :) I too prefer this printed to a plain sari she definitely embodies “Timeless Elegance”

  11. The Sari looks as plain and boring as it can.. I havent seen a more boring Sari like this in a long time, just because its plain doesnt make it elegant, it might be looking great when you see it in person but for pictures, no it looks too plain and boring..

  12. I’m afraid, i have to disagree with most of you. Although she herself looks graceful, the sari is drab and frankly ,so ordinary. Not befitting a jury member at Cannes. Pity, because with the right sari, she could have totally stolen the show!

  13. lovely and elegant – yay! way to go – she has done what many before her at Cannes have failed- presented an elegant dignified Indian image that is refreshing and lovely – with no bling!

  14. Love love love the floral print…she totally stands out…
@Siddarth….I really dont think she would have looked better in a blingy saree…some people would have jumped on her for not being ‘age-appropriate’.’

  15. sharmila tagore looks beautifula and definitely holds her own among the other women. just a random thought i had, if aishwarya rai had appeared on the jury (or anywhere at Cannes) wearing what the others have worn (except MAYBE the woman on the extreme right) she would’ve been bashed to no end..haha. its funny i associate Cannes with aishwarya!

  16. I have to agree that printed is more summery and fresh than plain. I would have chosen a better combo than that oh-so-Victorian color combo.

But, at the end of the day, fashion is not about the individual pieces worn but the ‘look’ that the person sports — and BOY DOES SHE ROCK IT!!

  17. The dimples are intact, the yellow printed saree is simply smashing, and she has (by leaps and bounds) outshined the other jury members!!!

  18. I seem to be the only obw who actually agrees with you P&P :) I think the print takes away from the formality
She does looke lovely though…and are all of the judge women this year? Because that would be awesome (sorry Siddarth)

  19. Wow.. she looks stunning. I agree with the “printed” chiffon being a good choice. Its a nice unexpected twist in this day and age of extremes (all too plain or too bling). I like that she is wearing multiple pieces (watch, necklace & earring) but the whole ensemble works well together because everything is delicate. I give her full marks for following her own style mantra and working it with confidence :-)

  20. Boring saree, but she’s totally working it!!
Who’s the lady in the center? She has come turned out like she’s jus out for groceries or somethin…

  21. her hair, make up, accessorie are great, she looks OK, but with all the beautiful sarees we have, why chose one so boring, the color does not do anything for her.

  22. She looks good, as usual. It doesn’t seem like she’s made a concentrated effort to look extra special or to please anybody at Cannes. And that’s fine. Every international event should not be looked by us like a stage to elevate ourselves. I like that Sharmila looks grounded (as did Nandita Das)…. not that there’s anything wrong with anyone who dresses up.

  23. stunning!! this is what every 60 year should wear and look like unless you are reed thin and can carry off western clothes. she looks tlike the royalty she married into. if any of you have had any interaction at all with old royals, you’d know this is the way to do it..ala maharani gayatri devi!! love love lovee!!!

  24. I love it. Very elegant and classy.

@Ratan & FPDP: I think what Ratan meant was that Soha Ali Khan has the genes and grace to pull it off if she chose to dress better and put more understated effort into it.

  26. plain chiffon would have looked tacky due to being too plain. I love printed chiffons in pastels with pearls ( like somone above mentioned – maharani gayatri devi’s signature style).

  27. Looks lovely. A nice afternoon wear with blush wine and light hors d’oeuvres. I like the lightness of it all. Everything well done, hair, jewelry, make up..Too bad she messed up the beautiful mint green benaras with bad accessories. This is pic perfect.
