In Sabyasachi

Ranveer and Deepika arrived back in Mumbai on Sunday morning color coordinated in Sabyasachi beige churidaar kurtas. Ranveer’s look featured a contrasting pink elephant motif benarasi jacket and Deepika was a red benarasi dupatta.

The newly weds sure looked radiant

  2. These photos really leave me with mixed feelings.

My gut response is to be annoyed with Sabyasachi who seems to have imposed his traditionalist fantasy of heavy silks, oiled buns, and giant sindoor onto both Anushka and Deepika’s bridal looks. Also with Deepika’s stylist Shaleena because why doesn’t she try out more age-appropriate, fresh, let your hair down looks for Deepika, which we know suit her so well?

On the other hand I feel:
    1. Deepika is no wallflower. She wouldn’t let Sabyasachi and Shaleena dress her up like this if she didn’t agree with them, right?
    2. Why should Deepika look beautiful only in the way *I* want her to look beautiful? Yes, I think her earlier looks suited her much more. But so what, if she’s happier with her current look?
    3. What is so wrong with brides wearing plain brown mojris, heavy silks, oiled buns, and giant sindoor? What does it say about me that I dislike this look?

Man, this one really threw me down a rabbit hole. . . . Sigh.

    • I kind of agree in the sense that I do find Sabyasachi’s styling ages the women who wear his clothes. Needlessly so. These are young women. Why not do young looks when you still can ? :)

    • I resonate so much with this comment! This style is really drab and ages her so much. I don’t understand why she sticks to this sticky oily, severe hair. She has had them for all the occasions and I fear she will sport it for the receptions too. But it also seems like this is Deepika’s wish- her stylist and hair stylist play around with different hairstyles for other clients. So I guess if she’s happy with it, I need to stop caring and whining. Having said that, I do miss her old styles. How happy and gorgeous do they look though! Truly in love newly weds and Ranveer looks dashing!

    • Yes, Amen!
Your quandary describes mine perfectly. I wonder if Sabyasachi is forcing this embrace of traditions and styling of yore in the name of keeping our “culture” alive. His designs have become more and more opulent. Velvets, silks, heavy heavy embroidery, super dense and big jewellery pieces, and overall very ornate ensembles. Sometimes I wonder, what is the chance one can wear those ever again?? Filmstar or not?
Or maybe because these people are film stars, they appeal to the masses by donning exaggerated symbols of marital status. As someone said, showbiz is a rocky boat to steer. Individuality + mass appeal + thinking about maintaining your popularity and style icon + making sure you are in the news + personal preferences is one hell of an expectation soup to be in!

      • Irony died here! You started a comment with an amen, which is borrowed but nonetheless a traditional wish of yore. And then have the gall belittle someone else sticking to their cultural traditions.

    • Sometimes i feel the people writing these comments need to take a chill pill.
Deepika has her own hair stylist and stylist. The final look is her call irrespective of the designers veiwpoint.
Isnt she appropriately dressed for a bride returning ‘By Flight’ from Italy (which should be a good 8-9 hours or maybe more) , going straight from the airport to her griha pravesh?
Do people expect someone to sit with her in the flight and do her hair and make up before she lands?

And whats aging about this look?
The fact that she tied her hair in a bun? Does she not favour this look many a time , even with gowns from other designers?
Or that she wore an anarkali with a red woven dupatta? Dont young brides in india wear such clothes anymore?
Or that she wore sindoor? Is that a novelty for young brides now?
She’s looks elegant, glowing , happy and she definitely looks like a young bride. Even 20 years down these pics and her look will never age because its not based on a trend. Its an indian classic. Maybe thats what she was going for in all her choices for her wedding.

      • True.. too much thought feeding her wedding looks. She’s newly married and obviously the couple didn’t want to turn up in sweats on 3rd day of their marriage even if it’s just airport, so however traditional they could manage to be. Not to forget they are stars for us but definitely human n have families who’ll be looking to receive them on return home, happy and somewhat dressed well for pics, immediate rituals n so.. too serious audience!

  3. They’re beautiful and amazing and madly in love and glowing. I do wish Sabya let the brides let their hair down, literally. The severe hair and humongous earrings seem painful.

  4. Love Ranveer’s dress. Dipika’s looks like she has worn a nice suit but used her wedding sari as the dupatta. I do find it bit funny that mainstream Bollywood heroines indulge in a lot of symbolism in their first pics after wedding. Like the mang bhari sindoor ?.

  5. I love this look. They look like they are letting love do the talking. I am all for minimalistic yet impractful traditional looks. It’s appeasing to see some of our leading ladies in Bollywood like DP and Anushka like to look classic and traditional which is also event appropriate.

  6. The couple look radiant and happy. But what’s with the clothes? No unique factor at all. Deepika and the oiled, middle parted hair… the less said the better.

  7. How tall Deepika is! Great height helps in making almost any outfit look good. As for Ranveer, this is the one I love! Always been his fan but those ott/comical outfits were taking hotness quotient away from him(strictly my personal opinion). Also, this has been quite a refreshing post after seeing some over accessorised ‘dilhsibanarasi’ hashtags on Insta. Deepika is letting her rich dupatta be the focal point which looks really elegant. Note: keping things simple always work than killing the look by over accessorising.

  8. Too much twinning ! Ranveer looks good but Deepika needed to wear a brighter color , Sabya has nicer embroidered suits . Nonetheless they look so happy and in love

  10. They look absolutely happy and in love! I grin ear to ear as I see and take in their excitement! congratulations to the couple!

As far as the dressing… as much as I like Deepika’s outfit, something about her tall lanky frame does not lend gracefully to this outfit. A skirt or those wide leg palazzos may have been a better option to cut the straight/lean stick like body figure the kurta promotes. while she is glowing, I feel like her dress could have been a 1000 times better. Thank goodness for her radiant smile and happy glow… the dress pales in comparison. Ranveer… oh, what a stud he is! Lucky lucky Deepika! ;)
