Sari Style

The festive season has had Ms. Mukherjee wearing a lot of saris and while some hit their mark, some clearly left a lot to be desired.

Our favorite of the four had to be her look in the white sari (far right), pulled back hair and big bindi… She looked gooood! In fact her appearance in the other printed sari comes a close second. The sari itself isn’t our favorite but Rani looked lovely in it.

The least favorite was a toss up between her in the garish red sari and in the equally garish green sequin halter blouse paired with the white sari.

P.S: Doesn’t Rani seem to have a thing for h u g e earrings when going with saris?! Is that a pattern we spot?! ;)

  1. P &P, the garish red sari ur referring to is a traditional bengali cotton tangail sari…and its completely appropriate for the festival. What’s so garish about it? Is it because its red? And what’s wrong with the huge earrings? Its not like she has over accesorized or anything…when she wore huge earrings, she omitted the necklace and kept it simple…I only agree with you on the awful green blouse appearance…but she looks amazing in all the saris…why are you guys so harsh on rani…

    • @ Anu
the tangail is fine, but the colour isnt. actually i didnt even notice it was a tangail till you pointed it out. the colour’s that bad.
she could have worn a traditional lal-pait Dhakai Jamdani for one of the occasions. but she looks lovely in all of those saris.
the halter blouse is evil tho.

      • The colour is a red hot…I think its fine…its just that durga pujo is an occassion where people take the liberty to wear such colours and deck up in jewellery…and yes, lumousP, the halter is ridiculously ugly

    • I liked the “garish” red sari the best coz as Anu says it is a simple and traditional Bengal weave in cotton. People wear monochrome red dresses all the time to kudos and the appreciative “red hot” . So like Anu I too am wondering what is so garish about this red sari. I’m not a fan of bikini blouses and the big earrings are meh, so I can see why on the whole the look maybe not be a winner….. but the sari itself is lovely. In the desperate rush to be blingy and wear clingy, slinky clothing traditional Indian fabric (both silks and cottons) with their distinctive weaves have all but disappeared from high profile events. A Notable exception is Kiron Kher. The red sari and the white one on the far right certainly make for a welcome change, I think.

      • I agree completely. Its really good to see smeone wear a traditinla sari and not one of those blingy sequineed saris. And its such a lovely red colour. Kudos to Rani for having worn such a lovely sari and standing out from the crowd

    • Hey Anu, I think P&P were referring to the garish red sequinned sari on the far left. correct me if i’m wrong, but i don’t think that’s the bengali one you’re talking about?

      • Nope…they were referring to the traditional cotton sari she’s wearing…these saris are typically worn by bengali women…tangail saris are infact a pretty huge handloom craft in bengal…they beat manish malhotra bling bling anytime…

      • i knw its late bt they r referring to red sari far left…
cos up above they say that their second fav is that printed sari luk bt didnt like the sari….

    • I agree with Anu. Tangail saris are pretty fine and delicate. The color is festive. The big filigree earrings and a ton of bangles are pretty traditional too.

I think looking at them without the right context might make them see a bit over the top. but they are all just right.

    • Agree, but I think this is the case of the sari not photographing too well, at first glance I thought it was the lacey red saree she wore for the ragaa watch launch, and the blouse didn’t make it better.
after reading your comment I noticed carefully and it is indeed a bengal cotton, I think the intricate weave is not showing well in the photo
and the color is a nice festive, traditional color which looks great irl, why should everybody wear pastels and neutrals all the time.

  2. Yay for the Bong beauty! The last pic has her dressing in a very typically Calcutta style… No matter her shape, her hair, her whatever, can I say again again she looks her best in Indian clothes?!

  3. I am not too fond of the red saree but I loved all the others. The white saree with red bindi is simply gorgeous.
While I am not a fan of the blouse displyaing trend but somehow her green blouse was decent enough, so compared to all the othre blouse showing sarees i have shown the celebs wear, this is my most favorite becasue it does not look ‘as’ tacky. I really like that saree though ( the one with the green blouse) and the last one with dark green blouse, I love love. Would love to wear a saree like that myself :)

  4. I actually love her look in the red Sari – it’s a beautiful dhakai/jamdani sari, and the color is both appropriate and very glam; she must have looked fabulous in person – not that she doesn’t look lovely in the pic.

  5. I hate hate hate to say this, but seriously she looks fugly in the middle two photos. I mean, c’mon: You really need to be an artist to ruin that wonderfully chiseled face, that smile, those eyes. Seriously, way to ruin it all by dunking your face in skin-colour mud and showing up. And what’s up with the hair?

It makes my heart bleed to see an elegant young lady like her to be suddenly so clueless of what looks good on her. Whoever said good actors are secure?

  6. Am I the only one who likes the green bloused sari? I like the style, it’s different.. and THANK GOD FOR AN ACTRESS WHO WEARS THE SARI RESPECTFULLY, and not sitting low on her hips, baring all her chest. Take note, Priyanka, Katrina etc.

  7. isn’t the third saree from the left identical to Aishwarya’s favorite Sabyasachi saree? I think Ash wore it in the Filmfare awards this year and also to the Oprah show….

  8. She is still beautiful. The only sari I like is that on the far right, pulled back hair.
This woman is stunning, but always seems to lack punch. And I am not being harsh on her, she is still amazing. :)

  9. Who cuts her bangs? Because that’s what I think is ruining the look in every picture except the far right one. In the left most one they’re falling into her eye, in the second one she’s combed them back (and that looks horrible), in the third one she’s done them in a way so they stay on her forehead but not in her eyes and they don’t even LOOK like bangs there.

I’ve had side-swept bangs myself and I know it’s a pain keeping them at that just-right length all the time but then again I’m not a celebrity and don’t have access to everyone/everything that she does.

  10. I think she looks fab in all of them – but in the far right pic, she just looks gorgeous and in all the pics she looks like she is having fun and that makes all the difference. A smile can make an outfit!

  11. rani’s looking good in all the saris..and yes the red sari is a traditional bengali sari, either a dhakai or tangail which is superfine mix of cotton n silk, so why the hate you ignoramuses??

  12. She looks so good in the traditional Bengali sarees and make up. They belong together, Rani and Bengali get up.
The ‘fusion’ sarees, not so much.

  13. I thought she looked wonderful in all 4 avatars!! Dressed very appropriately for the occasion(s), and didn’t find her garish at all.

The best look on her, per me, is the 3rd pic, followed closely by the 1st one.

  14. Ah…how lovely she looks in the two pics towards right…i believe she has worn this tacky red sari before somewhere …but i jst love her jewellary esp the bangles and the neck pieces…i luv traditionally decked up women

  15. She looks the best in the saree on the far right…but i dont really mind the green blouse/sari too…only din like the red one…shes always been beautiful…her weight loss is only making her look bettre now..

  16. I still think the red one is garish :) BUT I LOOOOOOVE THE LAST ONE. Rani has very very limp hair, plus she’s short so it just crowds her when she has long hair. The pulled up hair is gorge and what a LOVELY saree, especially paired with the slightly muted gold jewelery!!!! Totally want :D The other sarees are really unflattering on her (she second to last is ruined by the sleeves, she seems to have gained a bit of weight again).

  17. Rani looks fantastic. I don’t like the green blouse either. That being said, she looks amazing overall. This is way better than the white suits or overly casual attire worn on such special occasions.

  18. I only like the third sari – second from the right with the paisley print. The others are a miss. Plus she is wearing too much big jewelry – either do lots of small pieces or a few big pieces.

She does look better and more comfortable in saris.

  19. I like all the sarees…the 2 to the right more than the 2 to the left. Not liking the green blouse…but other than think she looks good. I like her in the red saree too..maybe with slightly less bolder earrings.

  20. Hey PnP….the 3rd and 4th are definetly sabyasachi sarees. his pattern of having a patch of raw silk plain border is evident. check out his collection that was previewed on miss malini’s blog.

  21. I love Rani in saris. She just looks soooooo pretty in them. Compared to all the ridiculous outfits she wore while promoting Dil Bole Hadippa – these saris are beautiful.
She does look the best in the last picture (white sari with green blouse)

  22. Rani is one of my super-faves and I love her in saris but I am answering very objectively here. I personally don’t like the red one. The all-over lacy look is not looking good to me at all regardless of what traditional make it is. I love the 4th the best. It’s simple and classy. The 3rd’s overall look is pretty too, but not liking those small prints (can’t make out what exactly the print is like) on the white part. The 2nd sari is dreamy…quite beautiful..BUT that blouse, although decent, is distracting. Moreover, the sari is slipping from the bust area and it looks odd. I’d have liked it completely covered from the side. But regardless, she will always be adorable to me no matter what or how she wears anything.

  23. I like the third saree (second from right). The earrings are too filmy for my liking…they crowd the look especially for this saree. Absolutely detest the green blouse and saree. She needs to change her hair. Personally, I am a great fan of red round bindis but in the right most look the bindi is too big for her especially with the bang on her forehead.

  24. the 3rd saree- the red black white combo- so reminds me of Aishwaryas recent Oprah interview saree – Ranis is exactly kinda opposite in the sense that where its black – it was white in Aishwaryas saree, Ranis white blouse over Aishwaryas black etc – although the material, make etc etc are so different – just my observation

  25. Rani looks prettiest in the last pic. The red sari maybe Tangail (I am not sure from so far) but the way it has been worn (esp the slinky blouse) is not traditionally ‘Bangali’. But then during the 5-6 days of main Puja, people try out different looks for different days, so its ok.

She really looks lovely in the last pic. I would have totally loved the green saree in the second pic, if it was made with zari instead of sequins.

  26. really gone off her since her rather desperate attempts to appear relevent and up-to-the-minute in recent months (fashion wise) – she looks good in the very last pic and proves that no matter how weight she loses or how young her next co-star is she was and still looks better in traditional outfits.

  27. the white sari that she’s wearing (the last one) is a bangeli sari true but its ( bangladeshi). the jewlery shes wearing with it is called “matir goyna” thts also bangladeshi. You see bangladeshi woman always wearing it on parties ot theme parks. I just wanted 2 point out some of the mistakes thts all.

  28. she said in an interview she wears all this bling(big earnings, big chudas) to shift the focus from her short height. and its a fact that ladies who are tall look taller in sarees and short ones look shorter. that explains the accessorising.

  29. the saree people are referring to as the garish red saree…is actually a Bangladeshi jamdani saree…and it’s most probably half silk and half cotton…..and i find it to be quite beautiful and traditional

  30. wow p&p, really? Just because your fashion knowledge is limited to name brands and you have absolutely no idea about the rich traditions of fabrics in the subcontinent doesn’t give you the right to impose your ignorance in a public platform. The “garish” saree you refer to has been hand-crafted by a karigar and his assistant for a period of 6 months at least. Just because an actress wore it distastefully and it wasn’t photographed well doesn’t mean you can get away with calling someone’s hard work as garish and disrespect him/her.
