In Ralph Lauren

The Met Gala showcasing the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons years is underway as we write and in attendance are plenty of celebrities. We of course fell off our chairs seeing Ms. Chopra in her Ralph Lauren trench coat gown featuring the large train. We were fortunate enough to catch the exhibit earlier today and if you happen to be in the area, you must make the time to see it. But back to the trench-dress, given the re-imagined, playful takes on coats and jackets that we saw at the exhibit, this trench falls right in line with the theme. It also helps that Ms. Chopra worked every bit of that look! We love.

  1. I am not so sure that this works; especially for an event like the MET Gala. This is just a trench coat with a train; there is nothing imaginative or whimsical about it. Her hair and make-up are great but overall; this is a let down for me.

    • The trench coat is unisex, which falls in line with the vision of the designer being honored. It was much more imaginitive than a lot of the cotoure on display. She at least made the effort to honor Reis vision. Only a handful made that effort so i will applaud the outcome.
Al though, I think she couldve stopped at the ankles, the train was just there for the benefit of the MET, which i can forgive.

      • Agree. She was indeed gutsy to wear this. Only thing she could have done differently was the earrings. It could have been more edgy.

    • Indeed, this is merely a trench coat with a train. Nothing even remotely avant garde about it. Nothing remotely unisex about it either – can’t think of too many men who would wear this ultra-fitted dress with a 10′ train, just because it has trench coat details.

      • I agree. I dislike this look immensely. Trench coats (and Ralph Lauren) are soooo classic that they are not even close to Comme des Garcons’ raison d’etre.

  2. This is a major fail! It’s neither a color innovation nor a dress ! Seriously what an ugly dress. P and P – did you praise this for PR reasons!

  3. She definitely looks ready to be the next bond :) ( not Bond girl but bond . Recall her famous response to the question around this a while ago :))

  4. I really (desperately) want to love this
I like that she went big. I like that she embraced the avant garde
But but but…sadly this doesn’t work
I keep looking at the look willing it to speak to me cause I adore PC. But sadly this is a failed experiment
Nothing works for me – dress, hair or shoes.
But it’s that dress. It’s just not well designed
    Sigh

  5. Hi, thanks for explaining the context…this year has been a little confusing because of our lack of awareness about the evolution of the designer and the brand influence (I’m taking the liberty of using ‘our’ because I’m sure there are more like me). Also from coats to reds to mesh…I’m not sure what this years about!

A video with your take on the looks and perhaps some history or maybe your experience at the exhibition would be welcome!

Back to the topic, yes Priyanka does own her look!

    • Hi M, You can go through our Instagram stories and google a little bit about the designer Rei Kawakubo to get to know a bit more about her design aesthetics. Only then, Priyanka’s choice will perhaps make a bit more sense. Rei is not the traditional fare.

      • Oh I read about her (the designer). I think Rihanna and Katy Perry did total justice then. I’m still not convinced with Priyanka’s outfit. Deepika’s doesn’t work with the theme but she was wearing a Tommy Hilfger so probably she was representing the designer there?

  6. Nope! I don’t like it at all…I don’t like anything about the look. I mean it’s Metgala…she could’ve picked anything on earth and she chose this. Extremely disappointing.

  7. Fell off the chair was absolutely my reaction as well! She is selling the look with all the attitude she’s got! Proud of this girl!

  8. Feels like she just wanted to recreate the rihanna moment with that train. Like someone said it’s actually just a trench coat with a train, nothing interesting but no doubt what made it work was her confidence. She really knows how to work a carpet

  9. in the name of fashion …most the celebs wore hideous outfits whether gigi, bella ,priyanka, deepika rihanna…i think the theme ugly ,non wearable senseless and expensive … would been more appropriate…. looking at clothes….looks more like death of fashion …

  10. Fierce indeed!! but its making her look devilish!! …don’t like the trench coat dress and neither r the booties doing justice to her endless legs!!

  11. I dunno, I dunno. She has this fierce Japanese warrior queen look and it is in line with Rei’s aesthetic….and yet. I think she wanted to make a big splash like Rihanna and it didn’t come off quite right. I wish she’d taken more risks (again, like Rihanna) but then people in India would’ve pulverised her into ashes. Still, this ranks as a damn good try, considering the theme.

  12. Rei Kawakubo is offbeat and so are her designs maybe but Priyanka’s outfit is plain meh. A metre long train doesn’t equal drama. This dress is trying to be dramatic and so is her entire look. I might be against the popular opinion but she isn’t selling this to me.

    • My best dressed for 2017 Met Gala would have to be Cara Delevingne…that’s how fierce is done. P&P please feature it.

  14. In theory this dress would have been fantastic, follows the theme to the tee and has the Met required dramatic element. Unfortunately on execution it looks terrible! PC could do so much better.

  15. Killed it ! She looks spectacular and the train is everything!
Wish her top knot were a little more symmetrical, but that is just my OCD kicking in

  16. Perfect for Met Gala! Go big or go home and Priyanka brought it! She totally slayed. Priyanka is on all the Hollywood best dressed lists… Vogue, Vanity Fair, ELLE, Harpers Bazaar and the rest. So awesome!

  17. Absolutely fabulous! Kudos to her guts and her confidence. She not only stuck to the theme but also highlighted her best features. Jaw dropping indeed!

  18. This was an event to experiment and she did- she was in line with the theme- aligned with the whole Quantico thing- I hate trench coats and did not particularly like the outfit- but no one could carry it the way she did- she grabbed eyeballs, made headlines ,which I assume is what the intent was- I hate the silver earring (very Kamla Market style -if you know what I mean) but other than that she nailed the look!

  20. I am an Indian and neither Priyanka nor Deepika are representing me. And I am not proud of them. Coming to the looks, they look very bad.

    • I think they need to represent themselves!!??!! And I really don’t think they care too much about the pride you would or would not feel.

    • In that case you are just one of the indians….i am loving them..and i think they specially priyanka is representing us well and i am so proud of them.

    • I don’t think they are elected politicians. They are not required to represent you. DP was representing Tommy Hilfiger. I think, maybe you should take umbrage with the Indian designers, who did nothing to try and represent India (although I am not sure this is necessary) – this gala is not about countries being pitted against each other. Just curious: did you feel represented by these women in their respective movies and TV shows?

      • Well..i can answer for myself..when i talked about them representing india nd me..i was not talking about met gala….
It was a general thing…dont we all exclaim if we see one of us excelling in any field…be it any field…
        Rest i loved priyanka’s look…deepika not so much….

        • Feeling proud of an Indian/accomplishment is quite a different thing than being represented. I feel proud of many Indians past and present (Indra Nooyi, Abdul Kalam, Pichai etc), even though I am not an Indian, but a member of the diaspora, but not one of them represents me or should because they did not sign up to do so. They are just accomplished beings to be admired (or not). The notion that individuals represent an entire group/people is dangerous, and politically charged especially in contemporary times.

      • Katy yes “to represent” Indians is a very big word. Priyanka and Deepika are there for their careers and personal gain and not to represent Indians. Katy I was saying generally in a broader sense ever since they are in Hollywood, their movies, interviews, appearances etc, not just met gala. Only people like Gandhi or Nagabhairava Jaya Prakash Narayana can represent my country. Coming to pride, I am proud of M.S.Subbulakshmi, Tyagaraja, Annamacharya, Mohd Rafi, Ghantasala etc that they belong to my country. Just out of curiosity, Katy, may I know your country of origin?

        • I find it interesting that many people on this blog and social media feel as though they and India are let down when celebrities don’t meet expectations at foreign events like Cannes. It doesn’t matter that the celebrities in question happen to be representing a European cosmetics brand, or in Deepika’s case at the met, Tommy Hilfiger, who a few years ago was slammed for racist advertising. It seems rather backward – they are being applauded for representing what is authentically not Indian, but when Vidya Balan promoted Sabyasachi she was roundly criticized! As a proud fourth generation African, I find the need for legitimacy from the west, to be a testament to the notion that India is still struggling to find legitimacy on its own terms. When you have an artiste who is comfortable in his or her own skin and authentic to the art and themselves, then perhaps, they will represent India. I think folks like Satyajit Ray, Ravi Shankar, Tagore have done so, and have been immortalized at home and abroad. Chaitanya, where are you from?

          • True. There are many greatest Indians who are artists, musicians, leaders who represented India well. Even at Olympics and sports events, the players represent their particular countries. I am from Warangal, Telangana state Katy. Recently Telugu director SS Rajamouli from Telugu film industry made a movie Baahubali which has become the biggest movie India has ever made smashing every record propelling Prabhas as the massive superstar of India. They made a movie in Hyderabad which is talked by all over the world now. I feel they made Telugu film industry and India proud without going to Hollywood. If you haven’t seen Baahubali 2 it’s a must watch movie, a visual wonder released in several languages. Katy are you an Indian by ethnicity who is born and brought up in Africa?

  21. The theme looks for something architectural, constructed and creative. This is just a trench coat with a train. Nothing architectural about it. Nor is it in line with the Comme des garçons esthetic.
The colour and make up reminds me of the Yeezy line, not a good look. Wasted opportunity in my opinion.

  22. She definitely got noticed& brought the necessary Drama to her look but I just feel she could have worn something more creative then a simple trench coat! Her jewellery( silver earrings looked cheap) and hair makeup could have been a lot better as well. If she had to do this look it should have been in sequins or metallic something more dressy. She definitely won over Deepika’s look.

  23. I’m not gonna comment on PC’s choice of dress and how she fared in it considering she made the whole world sit up and notice akin to what Rihanna had done in the previous Met Gala…But my question is how the hell did she walk or do anything INSIDE the gala cos I read somewhere that she required around 6 people to ENTER the gala in this trench coat ?!!

  24. Why compliment everything she does, all her actions and looks so far are so pity seeking attention?? No class and while between her and DP this blog keeps patronizing her as if she pays them.
