The ‘Batua’ Ladies

Comment image 32

Nandita Das and Tisca Chopra made an appearance this past week in LA at the 7th Annual Indian Film Festival for the world premiere of “Gandhi, My Father”. Both ladies wore saris that they accessorized with gold batuas. Nandita wore a maroon silk while Tisca wore the same one from last year’s Filmfare Awards, this time with a different blouse.

We haven’t seen Tisca too many times in a sari, but even at the Firaaq premiere Tisca wore a contrast color blouse. Guess, we’ll have to wait for another appearance to see if that is her favorite thing to do! As for Nandita, we ( and you) loved her sari from the Firaaq premiere and after seeing that one, this one seems quite so so. Don’t you think?

You can catch them both at the Firaaq premiere here.

  1. It still looks good, Nandita carries it off awesomely and given the large number of fashion disasters or so so’s we see, we have to applaud her for looking so good

  3. They both look really pretty! I almost wish they weren’t carrying the batwas at the same time. They’re unique little things and need to appreciated one by one. having two together takes the shine out of them

Love their hair. Not need LV, Birkins and Chanels to look great. BRavo!

  5. Pretty women! Tisca looks lovely, I quite like black/green contrast. Nandita looks gorgeous although her saree is a little bleh.. wish she wore a few bangles or a lovely kangan.. Don’t quite like the bare hand look with a silk saree.

  6. They look stunning but I’d love to see Nandita in a more contemporary sari – sometimes you can just be a little too simple!

  9. i think the batwa is getting overexposed now.

anyway, tisca’s looks more like a jhola than a batwa. on the whole, they both look good.

  12. I love the way Nandita’s draped her sari. The traditional graceful way just looks so beautiful that any sari looks brilliant.

I like Tisca’s combo to – quie nice and different and no OD on the bling factor thankfully.

  14. I love Tisca in this sari…..its better worn here than at the Filmfare awards in my opinion, maybe coz of the new hair cut…..Nandita always looks effortlessly graceful but I do have to say I much preferred her Firaaq sari to this one!! This looks out of her granny’s trunk!!

  15. Tisca’s clothes and makeup look lovely. I wish she did something with her hair to complete the look. It looks a bit unkempt.

  16. both of them look elegant, beautiful…this is indian done right. loooove the batuas…the perfect bag with saris. tisca’s contrasting blouse is absolutely gorgeous and love her earrings too!! nandita is great but her sari is a little too old looking- like she raided her mum’s closet!

  17. Nandita looks so dignified, as does Tisca.. no bikini blouse for either, I see…
Tisca reminds me of Juhi Chawla for some reason, looks like a very sunny person, I would love to talk to Nandita and get her opinion on films… she should totally be a film critic a la Ebert

  18. Nandita das is so overrated. Just because she wears a sari and ethnic jewelry doesn’t necessarily make her elegant. It looks as if she tries really hard to carry off this Indian beauty and handicraft supporting look.
It’s sad that many people on this website have enough knowledge on what constitutes good western wear but no one has a clue on good Indian wear, as long as it looks JNU type, its earthy!
Look at Priyanka and Sonia Gandhi’s saris, Waheeda Rehman, Sanjana Kapoor, whenever she wears one that is..
Nandita Das is just a wannabe

  19. Nandita looks graceful and elegant and definitely not a wannabe…..she always has favored sarees and I think she carries them off amazingly well…simple down to earth look which anyone can achieve and its refreshing.
I would say that Nandita falls in the same category as all the above that Koel has mentioned.
