In Anavila

At a press meet for her movie Manto at Cannes on Tuesday, Nandita was seen in a grey and black linen sari by Anavila. Keeping it simple and fuss free, she finished out her look with silver earrings and a black potli.

Now, a grey sari in sunny Cannes won’t excite everyone, but this is Ms. Das’ aesthetic and she wore it well. She looked nice.

  1. Ok, I will be honest here! This is plain bad! I know people have soft approach towards Nandita. So most of them will find this look just fine! I am all up for saree on international platform but this is not how I want someone to represent India. Just imagine the rich silk saree, even if a plain one, say hot pink with the blouse being same as worn by Nandita would have looked so good. Being earthy is one thing but this outing of Nandita falls in shabby category!

  2. She always looks so much more elegant than all the absurd gowns Sonam/Aishwarya/Deepika/Mallika/Shruti/Etc wear.

There will never be an outfit more elegant than the sari. Long live the tradition Indian textiles!

    • Absurd gowns.. you nailed it…
She is dressed age appropriate and looks smashing. Shabby is not the right term to label her look, while absurd sure was

  3. I love Her hair, her face, the earrings, the drape and her poise. I am afraid the saree is just awful. There are a bazillion hand woven sarees that will both fit her aesthetic and still look beautiful.

  4. She looks great as usual. Also, i partly agree with Moni.
I think she is underdressed considering it is Cannes and people are there to showcase the best of their style. Example her shoes and hair – looks as if she were heading to work or may be a small informal family function.

  5. Nope…. this just too sad and dull, Cannes or not.
If Nandita Cannet pull off this saree, then no one canne :)
Moral of the story – the saree should be Canned…

    Pardon the pun(s:)

  6. She looks good, and I’m glad she picked a blouse with a different cut. I think we’re used to seeing Indian women in brightly colored sarees, so this shade of grey looks dull to us. However, on a international platform, it is elegant, although understated by Cannes’ standards.

  7. This is really sad. It’s like she ran out of clothes and found this at the bottom of her suitcase. you don’t have to bring high drama but at least you can put an effort for the press meet of your own movie.

  8. She goes to showcase her movies, not as an Ambassador for any make-up company. Dressing to grab attention or prove a point is not on her agenda. In my opinion, she’s looking nice as well as relaxed. Can’t say that (relaxed) about any of the three L’Oreal actresses who walked the red carpet.

      • Couldn’t agree more, high fashion is not her agenda. That is a lovely sari, glad she doesn’t succumb to the canne-Y demands. Such a lovely bone structure she has. And those eyes.. are li? coals! I doubt she’s reading this.. but to me she is the most beautiful woman on my list. That confidence in her own skin makes her glow like no shimmer or bronze make up would!

  9. She is just so comfortable in her own skin. Love the confidence and complete ease while being photographed. The others try so hard and she casually walks in and owns every look, every year. If there is rebirth, I want to be Nandita Das in my next birth.

  10. Probably the only time I liked a linen sari…rather Nandita lends it her aura:) There is no denying that she is a stylish woman.

Maren Ade who is a director is on the jury and she is pretty “simple” too. But completely confident in her skin. Much like Nandita. Nandita is there to shop around her film. If our daughters are reading this blog nothing wrong in indicating to them that there are many many ways to dress for a festival of films, there are many film occupations beside being an actress, that professional and working styles also enjoyable.

The red carpet is a small part of a festival and being a walking endorsement for cosmetics and couture is not all there is to fashion.

  11. This is an average look by Nandita’s standards. She used to wear a bindi with her saris, and it used to light up her face. This is too toned down to be a classic Nandita Das look.

  12. I think she looks great. I don’t mind the grey color that much either cos the saree looks light and breezy which is perfect for Cannes. If we are ok with others wearing black gowns at the beach at Cannes, why not this?

  13. I love this ensemble. It is understated, yes but I find it very classy, elegant and event-appropriate since she is there for her film. Although I must say a dash of colour on her lips would’ve elevated this look
