  1. I know being a model isn’t about being beautiful face-wise its more about the hanger-like body, but still most are kindda pretty, this woman looks like a man.

She even has the same expression on her face all three pics, like she’s ready to kill us!

  3. Lakshmi Menon has such a stunning, exotic face! you just want to look at her again and again. i think her strength lies in the fact that she doesnt look like the typical pretty model. i love her jaw bones! lol
about the magazine.. i think they could have done a better job with foundation. her face looks too patchy.

  4. Love, love the third look. The colours look fab on her. For the cover, its the sleeves – both on the model and Lakshmi that are a put off.

  6. Now THATS what you call great styling and photography… BRAVO!
i think Lakshmi Menon is a beautifull model, saying that she looks like a man is just too mean..we all should be proud that she is doing so well in the international circuit. she has opened several shows for great designers including HERMES.

  7. In my opinion this has to be one of the strogest and fiercest covers i’ve ever seen..and all because of Lakshmi! She’s just pure perfection..her face, her look, her hair, her body are to die for! and she’s working the hell out of the hideous outfit! Plus the hindu goddess look fits her perfectly without being too stereotypical! just gorgeous!

  8. i think the photos esp the goddess one had the potential to be fierce. but some of her other runways she looks like a tranny but in others like the swatch campaign she looks stunning. she looks kinda drugged out though, same face in all the pics, as tyra would say give some tension in the eyes not the lips! As for makeup i think she has like me slightly darker patches arnd the mouth, so the oily bronzed look just makes her look patchy.

  9. u know sometime ago i had read somewhere that the very thin no curve look works in the fashion industry coz a lot of the designers are gay n so they prefer the man like features better!! this page jus confirms it for me! lol….she looks like xerxes from the movie 300 to me!!

  10. I do not mean to be contrary, but I am sorry, AriL, she does not look at all like a Hindu goddess! The last picture is more like a Maasai warrior from East Africa. I am really not sure what that last picture is about — it simply looks like a bunch of rags on a very angry amazon…

  12. LOL@anastasia. She DOES look like the king.

Ditto@kahlu. What’s hindu goddess about the look!?! clothes, jewelry, bronze makeup all seem African.

  13. Laxmi Menon is plain awesome! I was so happy to see her in like EVERY show during NY fashion week. She has a very strong face (something not idealized in the Desi aesthetic) which can translate as pure FIERCENESS.
On the clothes, you have to understand, they are not PURELY about wearablility AT ALL. Of course it doesn’t make sense…what kind of art does?!

  14. I really like the photoshoot. Love the posture and the model. I’m glad she’s featured on a magazine cover in a photoshoot that isn’t ethno-glam.

P.S. Lakshmi is also featured in the L’Officiel magazine for March. You guys might want to check those out :D

  15. Oh my gosh this woman…I don’t care about the (cray cray fashion editorial) clothes, she’s stealing all my attention! I don’t know what to call her, it’s definitely something more than beautiful.

  16. “coz a lot of the designers are gay n so they prefer the man like features better” – ummm what?? thanks for the laugh saba!

Choosing a model has nothing to do with the sexual preferences of the designer…geez…they like models with no curves because the clothes hang better!

  17. she is very pretty, this woman. and very naturally gorgeous. beats me why anyone would to do this to her.
yes it is fierce, but it takes away from her looks(like anyone would really need to!!!)

  18. I like her on the cover, very striking! And so much power in that pose when compared to the runway model.

Btw, are there any desi models who get to show off their beautiful dark skin *in India*, in Indian magazines? From what I’ve seen they’re all airbrushed to a beige complexion.

  19. Striking is the perfect word to describe Lakshmi Menon. I personally don’t find her beautiful, but if I saw her walking down the street, I (as a straight woman) would look at her twice, simply because of the strength of her features. She has a commanding presence.

That being said, I don’t like her styling in the photoshoot. Her bronzer is splotchy and gives her the appearance of being unwashed. I loved her in the Hermes spread, because she looked so regal, but here, she doesn’t look all that great (due to the fault of the stylists, of course).

Yes, no one would actually wear these clothes in real life. That’s why they are in editorial spreads. They’re meant to be outrageous and over-the-top. Fashion trends are inspired from elements of each outfit that are continued throughout the collection.

  21. Ladies,
While we love to encourage a healthy discussion, because some of the comments here were getting directed at others and in not in a nice way, we had to moderate them.

Lets keep in mind that we get readers from all over the world and more importantly of ALL AGE Groups. Not everyone is bound to know everything.

We aren’t trying to restrict freedom of speech but just making sure things don’t go overboard. For, this post, lets keep the comments directed at Lakshmi and Lakshmi only!

  22. lakshmi is styled in a very edgy way here and she looks great but fyi, she can also look pretty and feminine when she’s styled conventionally.

  24. I think part of the reason Lakshmi’s career took off internationally is because she has such strong features- it’s not a look that’s idealised in India, and especially not in conjunction with dark skin.

I personally think she’s gorgeous, and highly versatile to go with it. And never mind Hermes (I got sick of the hackneyed pink-and-orange theme), has anyone seen her in the Givenchy ads? She looks amazing there. But I love the whole OTT dripping-in-jewellery look she’s got going here- it takes a strong model not to be worn by that look- instead, she wears the hell out of it, and looks fantastic doing so.

And as for the ‘who’d wear this’ criticisms…Dazed&Confused has always had a rather left-of-centre reputation, they’re not concerned with trying to be just pretty. Editoeial fashion isn’t really about real-world clothes anyway.

  26. I find lakshmi menon very pretty and also like these photos – aesthetically pleasing.

But some one please do explain me what is the deal with making models look masculine? i read some where even the high cheekbones is preferred because it makes them look less feminine ( a well rounded face is considered feminine) and also the flat body.

I am ok with slightly masculine look, might make the face interesting, though i dont think lakshmi’s face is, its her attitude that shines thru in these photos(in short i am a fan), but the flat body i cant stand. some one if u can please explain.

though i am told the european fashion shows are going for non-size zero llok.
