Sari Style

Wearing a black and grey sari, Kalki attended the Manmarziyan screening this past week in Mumbai. The sari was cute but wish she’d draped it better. She still looked cute.

  1. She is as cute as a button but in my opinion there is no excuse to tie your sari below the navel unless you are doing an item song. Because as years of Bollywood cinema has taught is that an item song in a sari is incomplete without the lady exposing her navel!

    • She looks just fine to me, not vulgar at all!! Plus the beauty of South Asian classics like the saree is that one can adapt it to suit their own sensibility, which is why it’s wonderful to see people who want to dress modestly/conservatively do so in a saree, but at the same time if someone wants to accentuate their curves, what’s wrong with that?

    • Don’t know how tall Kalki is, but most saris are very short and one has the wear a sari very low if you are more than 5’7″ in height.
Hardly get 2″ to tuck in the pleats in most saris except Kanjeevarams. By the looks of it, the sari seems very short.

      • Yes, I agree, only some saree varieties have sufficient height. I stitch a fall to the top of the saree when it is very short, just upto the point where the pleats end – that way, it is easy to tuck it in.

  2. I have no problem with how low or high the saree is tied, as long as it looks decent, but what i dont undestand is this trend of wearing brogues or sneakers with sarees as a fashion statement. For comfort , yes any day. But to prove a point of different fashion nah.. not enamoured of this saree either. Kalkis disarming beauty is always attractive on the eye

  3. She showcases her strong points in this sari – her collarbones, her waist and her back.
Maybe it would have looked more polished if it didn’t look as if the sari was too short for her from behind. Yes heels would have given a better finish than these slip ons.

  4. I don’t think it’s a saree, actually. It’s a variation of the pavadai-davani or the mekha chador – a pleated sarong like skirt, and a dupatta tucked into the waist and draped like a pallu.
