Kundan Jewelry

I am in love with “Kundan”. And No Kundan ain’t a guy and neither is Kundan a girl!
(I had to clarify! What if mom and dad are reading!)

“Kundan” is a form of gem setting with pure gold. The purest and softest form of gold (24K) is hammered into sheets and mounted around stones to encase them. I didn’t know this, but because the stones are encased, light strikes the stones only from above which actually gives them the dull look versus a shiny one.

Seeing the Jodhaa-Akbar poster reminded me of this classic and timeless style of jewelry. Now, what Ash is wearing probably runs into lakhs and crores of rupees, but since I don’t have that much money, I am going to have to find pieces that are much cheaper but that still maintain the essence. I searched far and wide, high and low all over the world (on the internet of course!) and finally came up with some reallly cute pieces that I am thinking of buying.

These cute bangles are very reminiscent of the Kundan design with the red and green stones that almost look like precious rubies and emeralds. You might think that these might run upto more than a thousand dollars, but they are only $34 for the pair.

I have never seen Kundan anklets before but am totally loving the idea. These would be great to wear with skirts or capris. You could probably even wear these on one hand and make a great chunky bracelet out of em!

An…d for the grand finale.. I cannot end this post and not have a pair of earrings.
This simple chandelier style earrings with golden beads are just too delicious for only $32.

A Bit Of Whimsy

When it comes to jewellery, every once in a while I look for some rather whimsical pieces that are just fanciful, kitschy, unpredictable and oh well, whimsical! And at one such quest, I found this necklace at J Crew. Its in a classic blue-green combination and what makes it so wonderful, is the frog clasp made out of pave’ crystals on a double strand teal colored glass necklace. And if you look close enough, you’ll notice that the beads are knotted on a rasberry colored thread which just adds to the contrast! At $125, this bit of whimsy is yours to have!

The Turtle Ring by Kenneth Jay Lane from Shopbop is whimsical and cute and oh-so-adorable! The ring is in 18K gold and has Swaroski crystals, and its size can be adjusted! And at $88, you are getting a cocktail ring that makes a statement, and how!

And this last one…

Ok, so your first instinct might be, isn’t that a bit much? I’ll allow you that.. But, yes there is a but! Look again. It is so whimsical, girly and way too much fun! The Large Bow bangle from Fallon Jewellery also available at Shopbop screams witty whimsy with vintage vibe. At $219, it certainly is a bit pricey, but thats one statement piece which certainly will reap rewards!

Its a cynical world baby, and we all need a bit of whimsy now and then!

Watchu Gonna Do With All That Junk?

A couple years ago, I had a major crisis. I had too many earrings and I could never find anything. There would be many nights, where, I was rushing to get ready and at the final moment would never be able to find the pair of earrings I wanted to wear with my outfit! What would be worse, is that I would find it a day or two later! So I finally got fed up with the situation and decided to come up with a way to organize all my earrings rather than get mad.

So once I decided I had to organize my jewelry, I thought to myself, it can’t be that hard. There is definately something out there that will take care of all my “needs”. “Needs” meaning plenty of storage for all my earrings, which last time I counted were more than 50 or so. And on top of that, all of these earrings were of different sizes and different types.

Well, as I found out, there was nothing in the market that was just right for me. Most of the storage options were either too small or too generic. Either, they would have two rows each for necklaces, rings and earrings or they would have the same spacing if the storage piece was for earrings specifically.

Finally, I decided to build a solution by myself and am very proud of my invention. All it took was some thick paper that I bought from Michaels and I just pierced holes into the paper with the earrings. I stick this up on my wall with thumb tacks and voila.. I have an elegant solution for my earring clutter and now it’s so easy for me to find a pair! It takes care of all my chandelier earrings as well as my small earrings. I use the lower most end for the ones that have a loop style. Simple and cheap, isn’t it?

Now, if you prefer to buy something rather than organize yourself, I found some really cute alternatives available online now.

Be’jewelled

Amrapali has long been a favorite of mine for those unique jewellery pieces, that you know not everyone is going to be sporting or ones of which thankfully, cheap knockoffs won’t be readily available at Janpath! While their traditional jewellery is good, I especially look to them for their contemporary designs in Gold and Silver. Those pieces while having a modern edge still manage to retain their ethnic appeal and can be wonderfully teemed with clothes that are either western or traditional. A classic example of what I am talking about is this piece, a pendant and earrings set, in Gold and Onyx which I see being worn with a Sari, a Salwar, Jeans and a tank or even with a LBD with equal aplomb.

You know, everyone does a strand of pearls, but imagine how fabulous you’d be if you did this piece in South Sea Pearls…It looks like a traditional piece in Kundan but the twist comes in with the South Sea Pearls.

And I absolutely love the earrings in silver. Again, they have that versatility which enables them to ‘go’ well with any outfit, whether western or traditional. It is casual enough to be day to day, while still leaving room for them to be worked into your nights.

Cocktail rings are all the rage: bigger they are, the more kitschy they are, the better they are. So, now imagine, if you were sporting these rings in Silver, wouldn’t that make a statement? They are unique, and like with all things old, they are so new again! I see a woman who is sure of herself, one who walks into a room to own it, totally working this ring!

What a wonderful line of jewellery. For more, go HERE.
