Versace’s Spring 2018 runway show will forever be memorable for bringing back the most iconic supermodels of my times (the 90s) and this month, Elle pays ode to that moment by featuring some favorite models from India on their April cover, wearing Versace, but of course! (Note to keep in mind, this possibly is a very paid collab…)

I did love the idea and it was refreshing not to see another leading lady from Bollywood on the cover. So kudos, Elle, for this!

Having said that though, this would’ve been my wishlist for truly nailing the 90s Original Supermodels edition. Mehr Jessia, Noyonika Chatterjee, Shyamoli Varma, Madhu Sapre and Indrani Dasgupta. Add Sheetal Mallar, Nina Manuel too!

Which five would you have liked to see?

Archana Akil Kumar, Malaika Arora, Ujjwala Raut, Dipannita Sharma & Mehr Jessia

  3. Was glad to see Mehr on the cover, …Except her the rest are relatively new. Malaika stood out like a sore thumb!
Would have loved to see Madhu ( one of my all time fav)

  4. No Supermodel list is complete without Madhu Sapre and Noyonika Chatterjee. WTF is Malaika doing there? And Archana is much junior to the others. I think she started out in the late 2000’s.

  5. Neither did Dipannita or Archana fit in there.. Such a random mix- like they started out well with Ujwala and Mehr and then lost their way

  6. Anu Ahuja, Simar Duggal, Sapna Verma, Carol Gracias.

And Ms. Arora doesn’t fit here. When was she a supermodel? Print and photo shoots, yes. Ramp, no. Even with those heels she is the shortest amongst all.

Also, how is Archana Akil Kumar a supermodel from past? I mean, 90s or early 2000s? Just asking.. Or is this a ‘curation’ of iconic models from different generations. But the three supermodels are from sometime ago.

I am thinking too much. But it isn’t a very well put together ‘supermodels from past’ cover, unlike the Versace Spring 2018.

  7. I agree – Madhu & Milind Soman epitomize 90s modeling circuit. Ranjeev Mulchandai, Nina, Indrani, Sheetal, Shyamoli …..any or all of them would have been fab. This group seems neither here nor there partly because Archana came later, Ujwala mostly worked abroad and Malaika was not a super model. Besides the aesthetic of the cover is so unappealing. Grouping them so close together when they are wearing such busy prints doesn’t make for a very good visual. Compare that to Versace’s look – how the supermodels are placed, the similar gowns and the muted background really lets them shine. Not a very fitting homage, either to 90s or to Versace.

  8. If this was a 90’s re-union, except Mehr Jessia, none of them belong to the cover. The other models are relatively new and some are still Malaika was never a Supermodel, she might have been a super VJ, but never a moder…alas! But your wish list was is the epitome of the class of 90. Mehr Jessia, Noyonika Chatterjee, Madhu Sapre, Indrani Dasgupta, Nina Manuel and Jesse Randhava……oh boy, the cover would have smoked with them!!

    • She wasn’t so much a ramp model, maybe that’s y no suggestions.. more like print n brand face.. from as much I know. Bredmeyer.

Also I guess models were not really known out of the circle, they gave face n appeal to brands with their personality but not sure of any due credits.. so we know them by face n not so much by name, unless they came in movies.. or they would be a really long list up.

  10. Dear God .. Elle .. it is a shame (A SHAME!!) for a fashion magazine to goof up when listing the models from the 90’s Indian circuit !
This is a classic case of “You had one job!!”.
Anyone who grew up in the 90’s knows that our big five were Mehr Jessia, Madhu Sapre, Sheetal Mallar, Noyonika Chatterjee and maybe Feroze Gujral or Kamal Sidhu, not to mention the guys.
And why is Malaika Arora there..with that weird pose!!

  11. Missing Sheetal Mallar , Vidisha Pavate and Fleur Xaviar among others who graced every cover and editorial of the magazine in those days. Elle darling you need a new concept designer.
