In Ekaya

Kalank promotions on Thursday saw Alia in a red suit by Ekaya. Loved the suit, the middle pated hairdo with the big earrings, not so much.

Also, why is it that the ladies are so dressed up for these promotions in desi but the men seem to get away with denims (see inside)?

  1. I don’t think the ladies “have to” dress up for promotions. I’m sure they want to stand out and look the best they possibly can even if given the choice to wear casual clothing. But yes, would be nice if they didn’t feel any pressure to always look their best or highly dressed up.

    • You’re right. They don’t have to. But, when you consider marketing, the marketing team comes together to decide sort of which way to go. We’ve seen in-character promotions before. For other events, the men and women wore desi, but suddenly here the women are still in desi while the boys are in the casual denims.

      • I feel like that is probably a personal choice they make knowing that women’s fashion is so widely covered (and criticised), but I mean I agree in that I don’t see why everything has to be in-character. Also would like to point out that during Sui Dhaaga promotions, some people took issue with Anushka not dressing in-character, so this one’s a double-edged sword.

      • It would definitely be interesting to know if the women were given a dress code and the men weren’t. It would provide another reason to believe gender roles are not equal and especially in the film industry.

  2. Ever since the criticism about her low neckline kurtas, Alia’s past few neckline’s have gone way up, right around the neck. If people criticise these, soon we might see her in turtlenecks. p.s- the movie is supposed to be a period drama. Watched the trailer and it looks like a mish mash of period and contemporary. These four seemed to be dressed to represent that!

  3. I do have an issue with this thematic concept on part of the marketing of restricting these women to Indian wear for these promotions. I have nothing against wearing Indian for promoting a film but there seems to be a subliminal layer of imposing an image of sanctity or virtuosity to these women that would be lost or shattered if they were to deviate from such a strategy and wear anything non-Indian. I think this kind of thinking is entirely puerile and puritanical. Does a woman in the west have to dress up in Victorian corsets if she is part of a Jane Austen novel adaptation? This kind of approach is so warped. In any case, I have serious reservations about this film but this is not the place to air those. That harangue being over, she looks passable but please someone get rid of these chaptey baal.

    • Maybe it’s the case of mole hill out of a mole. Women have always been into dressing up even if it’s about walking down to a market.. men would dress up on the most of probing if given a choice. It’s not like women were made to look made up for the promotional while the male were coming off the way they’d please. We know so much nowadays that there’s no extent to assume. I think they all were so dressy throughout the campaigning.. so atleast the guys thought of taking it easy in the out of city duties.

      • You seem to have missed the point I am making. Yes, women do often dress up more than the men but this film-related imposition of a fashion code/theme that is purely Indian is baffling to say the least. As I pointed out earlier, actresses such as Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh won’t go around in kimonos if promoting a “Memoirs of a Geisha”. I am not making a point that this attitude is sexist but that it is reductive to the extent that these women are only sacrosanct if portrayed as the repository of Indian culture. One can dress up in “western” (hate that term) wear and still be perfectly more dressed up than, as you put it, “the guys thought of taking it easy in the out of city duties”.

        • I’d like to agree with you because yeah indian ‘culture ‘ is more accepting of men and their ways but women get termed as something.. but that’s probably not the case here. I like how you’d be looking through such daily stuff and sense passive dominance. And.. dressing up as per character is a silly marketing extension by Bollywood stars only.. as they’d like to get that much closer to fans by wearing the character even at promotions, not seen that even by south, punjabi, Bengali, marathon film stars ever.. let alone Hollywood or foreign stars.

          • At least we concur that this is a silly marketing strategy unique to the Hindi film industry. I only make the point that what may appear to be benign has an undertone of antiquated thinking. Let us agree to disagree.

    • Well, I agree with you but I tend to operate on the general belief that stylists, marketing teams etc. associated with film promotions lack the faculties required to think this deeply and minutely.
Additionally, I believe promotion related styling costs are born by the films’ producers and my guess is that they might be willing to loosen up the purse strings only to an extent- so, naturally the actresses get an entourage of stylist, makeup hair artists etc while the men are only too happy to show up in casual jeans and jackets.

  4. Look at Madhuri’s sharara suit! Loooooovely.
Love the fall of the bottom, so pretty and guess what = no chaptey baal!
This middle parted tight hair and earrings is so done to death, anyone wearing it immediately gives a sabyasachi-esque vibe and not in a good way. Is such tight hair even good ? Who sports such oily, flat hair unless they ran out of shampoo like 2 weeks ago! Such flat hair shows the entire shape of the head and it looks weird.

  5. If Alia were to do the heavy eye make up like Deepika, you won’t be able to tell them apart. Madhuri has been giving more of a relaxed vibe at these promo events and looks more comfortable than the younger lot who seem to be trying too hard. Maybe she knows she is going to rock in the movie despite her small role compared to the others who look completely miscast :p

    • True.. except Sonakshi, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri entire cast looks out of place.. their swanky upbringing comes in way of the depth a personality would have otherwise (which is fit For such characters)

    • These deepika comments are getting annoying. It looks like Deepika has the patent right to every look.
Alia and Maduri both look good

      • Who said they both are not looking beautiful????
There are some styles which are commonly seen on particular person & we tend to call it their style…Deepika after her marriage did same hair style with small bindi, big earring, middle parted bun..so,what’s wrong in it..??? if we call it a Deepika’s style.

  6. Payal, maybe it is as simple as women taking up the entire budget for marketing with their outfits that they leave the men no choice other than denims. Just trying add a little laugh here.
