The first images of the Robin Hood Premiere at Cannes are in and walking the red carpet was also Aishwarya Rai who wore a beautiful Elie Saab couture gown. Absolutely heart the color on her but that bouffant hair with the weird back so doesn’t go with the gown.

Keep checking back, we’ll upload more pics.
Update: Added more pics.

  1. she does have a very beautiful and radiant face. even though penelope cruz, monica belluci, bipasha basu, kim kardashian are the same size as her, they are all toned, whereas she is not. it’s not all a criticism. it’s just an observation. even doing 5 or 10 minutes of pilates a day can tone up the body. (pilates is a form of exercise.)

  2. She looks like sophia loren. Old! The colour and cut don’t do her any favours. The hair I don’t even want to comment on! Ash why don’t u wear a gorgeous colour like the pink purple maxi u wore sometime ago?

  3. Ohh…how can she walk with such a weird hairdo :-(…she seems to have gained some weight as well…the gown is pretty though & so is her gorgeous face…but the entire look.

She is soo beautiful..but y cant she wear a gr8 outfit to Cannes?!
Now Im sure she will disappoint us the next time too!

  4. Im sorry- but her hair looks horrendous! She looks like shes from the colonial times with it! The dress color suits her beautifully, esp with her light eyes.. but that hair… I cant bear to see it!

  5. Wow. Diss—aster.

…but I LOVE her hair from the back….and absolutely hate the ugly puff in the front.

Somehow, she looks uncomfortable in that dress to me. (And I normally like Ash.)

  6. i feel like the make-up washes her out..i wish she had put on a darker shade of lipstick..maybe a red? it is a pretty dress and she wears it well..but i think the overall effect makes her look a bit under the weather.

  7. I love the gown but folks I can’t help feeling that her Cannes stylists are secretly jealous of her or have some grudge against her; every single time there is exactly one WTF element about her look. This time it’s the hair; from the front the beehive looks so amateurishly styled – it almost looks as if some sections at the front will fall loose any minute.

The gown is gorgeous and she carries it well but that thing on her head…I can’t look past it :|

    Reply
    • ..agree with the beehive….but why would her stylists do that to her on purpose. Don’t you think it makes the stylist look bad when their client’s look gets creamed in the media?

If I were her stylist…I would use this attempt as my claim to fame. (But then, I’m not even my own stylist…I wear what hubby likes. Hmmm…..nah….Ash’s Cannes faux pas go way way back. )

      Cheers.

      • On a related note, Deepika was styled by Anahita Shroff Adajania for the Cannes Chivas event. (Outfit was by Rohit Bal).
Why cant Ash take her own (Indian) stylist with her who knows what works for Ash, and at the same time has a more International styling.

        Reply
        • And yes I totally agree, Aish looks a million times better at Indian events where she is styled by (presumably) an Indian stylist.

I’ll say it again: it takes some obscure kind of *talent* to make the most beautiful woman in the world look fugly.

          Reply
      • That’s why they only mess up on *one* aspect of her look. Have you ever noticed this about her Cannes appearances? There is always exactly one WTF element: if the make-up is good, the dress is fugly. If the dress is good the hair is fugly. If the hair and dress both are good then the make-up is fugly.

Come on L’Oreal, this is the arguably most beautiful woman in the world you’re working with here. It shouldn’t be DIFFICULT to make her look good. She looks 100x more beautiful when she steps out of the airport in ordinary clothes and almost no make-up, jetlagged and groggy from a long flight. You’re telling me you have the best stylists in the world working on her and she gets on the red carpet looking like she has a matted fox sleeping on her head? Or with fugly orange streaks in her hair? Or fugly plastic butterfly clips in her hair that we normally see on 10 year old girls (see Cannes last year)? Or OD-ing on silvery-blue eyeshadow? Or a gown that gloriously shows off her back flab?

Don’t get me wrong, nobody is perfect. I’m not complaining if Aish is untoned. But surely any sensible stylist wouldn’t go around picking dresses that highlight that. It just takes some common sense.

        • i agree… rmbr her green saree some years ago …. eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkks! i’ve never been able to get over that.
why ruin a good thing… and the loreal stylists have a very good thing in aishwarya. pity they dont know what the heck to do with it!

          Reply
        • hahah i love this rant..and i totally agree with you…i mean the job of a stylist is to style…l’oreal should not be paying for whoever put this look together!!

          Reply
        • So SO agreee on everything you said. It does take effort to make Aish look bad. Neeta Lulla also has a knack for it. But, yes, I have noticed over the years, that EXACTLY one thing is ALWAYS messed up real bad. And somehow, I think it’s always associated with L’oreal. Its the hair, or the makeup, coz the past two years the dresses have not been that bad. (Ever since she ditched Ms Lulla).

I guess Ash needs to be a bit more assertive with the stylists/hairdressers/makeup artists than she is abroad. After all, she knows best what works and what does not work for her. After a gazillion public appearances, outfits and hairdos one should know what will and what will not look good for oneself. She shouldnt just take someone’s word who just doesnt understand her body type.

Wow. this is getting to be one long thread!!

          Reply
          • She reminds me of the fairy godmother in Shrek! the hairdo is terrible, the dress, though lovely, does nothing but harm to her, and the makeup is awful! Dunno what the hell the stylist was thinking!

I think she should stick to sarees. She looks so uncomfortable in this.

    Reply
    • Have you seen her in the blue Elie Saab at Cannes last year? She OWNED it.

People need to stop telling celebs to stick to traditional clothing just because they look uncomfortable/ bad in one outfit. There are so many fabulous kinds of gowns, cocktail dresses etc, etc out there and there is something to suit every body type. Plus nothing says glamour (in the international Cannes context) like a stunning gown, a classy updo and a dazzling piece of jewellery

      Reply
      • I did like her in a few gowns last year. But it is my personal opinion that she looks her best in Indian clothing. You have the right to disagree. Esp after seeing her stills from Ravan this seems like a major let down.
Just because everyone else is in gowns doesn’t mean she also has to be in one.
And the first time she wowed the people at Cannes she was in a saree – for Devdas. And it is still her best look in Cannes till date.

        Reply
        • dn, the first time she was at cannes she was not representing l’oreal, so she be in traditional attire.
BUT now she is promoting l’oreal and i think they style her according to how they want her to be seen.

          Reply
          • she was beautiful last year at cannes, with the slick ponytail and i believe that light grey gown, but this year..i mean granted she is beautiful regardless..that gown is ok and that make up is totally washing her out!!! L’oreal style her better pleasee!!!!

            Reply
          • Yeah I realized she is at the hands of L’oreal, a pity. She looked good last year as she was more toned to wear gowns. No, I am not calling her fat. Think Queen Latifah at the Oscars. She rocked that look.
Ok not a saree, but a gown with slight ethnic touch, or atleast something that flatters her figure. After all, you have to dress according to your body type.
I love this gown, just not on Ash. And don’t they have mirrors in the dressing room to go out with this hair.
Kate Beckinsale’s puffy hair is awesome, how is Ash’s so bad?

I also think that the western fashion sites think she looks great as they normally don’t see her at the Indian events where she normally fares better.

  10. She looks good – if you discount her hair. Its just too distracting. Not sure whether its the color of the gown or the make up but she looks a little older than she usually does. Somehow the glow is missing. But I think the gown looks really good on her – and suits her curves.

  12. This is a disaster. The color is too light and she looks washed out and even the shape is unflattering for her since she has gained quite a lot of weight. There is nothing wrong with not being stick thin but she just looks out of shape and pudgy. Wouldn’t hurt for her to exercise and tone up a little. She is a movie star, after all, not just a suburban soccer mom.

Everything is wrong here; the color and style of the dress, the hair, even the make-up is making her look older than she is.

  13. The gown is beautiful and she looks good except for the puffy hair in the front. L’Oreal has the worst hair stylists.

BTW, the other fashion sites have given a thumbs up to her look.

  14. i’m not a fan, but i think she is beautiful. this appearance is disappointing… she’s suddenly looking older(a lot like vannessa williams) n quite a bit out of shape. the usual glow is missing from her face n the baby blue is not helping with that… n i don’t know how she walked out of a make-up room with that hair, its too huge for no one to have noticed it… all in all, she could have done loads better.

Most international fashion websites talk about how she’s gorgeous and how lovely the gown is, even if her hair is a hot mess and most commentors on there seem to agree. She’s even made a couple of best dressed lists.

P.S: I’m NOT saying that this is a bad thing or judging, Im as guilty as the next person, this is just an observation.

        • In case you dont know she is overtly critiqued by so many Indians – I have no idea why…Many of whom do not attribute “the most beautiful” tag to her…It is soooo extremely sad…a beauty like this is once in many generations..She has elevated “Indian beauty” all over the world, but some sections of the Indian media and also this blog sometimes cant get enough of attacking her……makes me sad :( they act like they see women like her all the time…lol

Freida is loved my the western media; she is on both the most beautiful and best-dressed lists and I have heard so many remarks on how “average” Freida is on this site… I haven’t heard any comments about attacking Freida then.. People kind of sniggered and agreed with each other..When the sad fact is she DOES embody Indian beauty.. The average Indian does look like Freida

Point is no one is attacking Ms. Rai. she has a PR team which chooses to tell us at every opportunity that she is the most beautiful woman we have ever seen. So, I do expect her to look it.
P and P, I am disappointed with you guys; I have seen some of my comments not being approved while there are a ton of other personal and rude comments approved. i am hoping you will approve this to let all kinds of voices be heard.

Also I dont see how Frieda comes into the picture at all. Like I said it was just an observation, nothing accusatory. I didnt mean for you to take my comment so seriously :-)

      • Count me in. I love her hair, maybe because I have always thought puffed up hair is hot. Even objectively, I see no fault in it. Aish is glowing and looks immaculate – well, almost except for her eyebrows – though I think it’s just her expression that resulted in the seemingly incongruous arch. By the way, I feel Aish rocks the dress more than the skinny model.

But I agree with some people above, she has to work out, man!!! She’s such a huge superstar but she doesn’t take care of herself? Too bad. C’mon Ash, get yourself a trainer. But whatever, I still think she’s the most fashionable actress in Bollywood. Can you imagine such a hairdo on Katrina or Kareena or Priyanka or Bipasha? Ewww.

  21. Is she really that much bigger than Eva Longoria? Her extra height (or Ms. Longoria’s lack thereof) and the giant hair make her look like she’s about 9 feet tall.

The dress is lovely on her, but the hair is very distracting.

  23. The Gown is truly truly adorable and so chic but Ash’s hair………………is such a huge let down!!! There was no need for the overly done hairdo when the gown can do all the talking. Ash needs to look at how Beyonce styles her hair with each gown she wears.

Hair not impressive but the gown is to die for.

If I were Ash I would have chosen a little brighter shade of lipstick given the gown is so light against her skin tone.

  24. The face looks pretty in the close up pic but what’s with the arched eye brow on one side. She sure does look bulky in this outfit. As mentioned above, the hair looks like a bird’s nest in the front and horse tail from behind. The stylists should stop experimenting for an international event like this.

We’ve said that you cant just call someone “FAT”. Gained weight, lost weight is fine and we’ve allowed the same comments for Deepika posts too.

  30. Ashwariya did pretty well and i am in sync with western media on the dress and hair. The hairdo is little difficult for some people back home to digest. But so glad to see her do something else other than a bun or center part.
We seem to always complain on whatever she does, sometimes for lack of trying new at times for trying new. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the hair. it looks awesome, just look at the close up pic. she looks divine.
But i guess this is Ashwariya so she is bound to draw extreme reactions.

I do agree with P&P that commenting about the body type and the appropriate clothes is not wrong but calling someone overweight, celebrity or no celebrity is wrong! And its not like she is wearing a small tee showing off her big tummy or wearing a tight dress showing all her flab… that’s a fashion mistake…. I am just saying she is not even fat! If we girls cant stop from criticizing a woman of this size, no wonder the wrold is full of girls with an eternal urge to loose a few more pounds, not eat healthily and have inferiority complex… I know girls who got liposuction done on their thighs with a 1mm difference before and after because they just want the perfect thighs for the beach! Sorry, its a long message… I just want girls to be more comfortable in their own skin and be healthy rather than look at the stick thin models as their targets!

Am never ceased to be amazed with the Aish worshipping that goes on the world over and on this blog – I never found her anything special and since beauty is a subjective thing I will go out on a limb and give my two cents – I personally feel I have seen so many other much more beautiful women in my daily life be it at school or work. And these women don’t have all these resources at their disposal.

Ok so this being a fashion blog I’ll get back on topic – she looks horrible. (And contrary to what people have said above – that doesn’t automatically make me a ‘hater’. Seriously.) The dress is so blah – don’t care who wears it. The make up is equally horrible especially considering who she is representing and finally the hair – well Marge Simpson pretty much says it. None of that says ‘most beautiful woman’ or anywhere close to it – to me.

p.s. love the look except the hair
p.p.s somehow feel Ash’s look wudve workd if she walked with Jr B and not Eva!

  44. Love the gown. Ash in the gown cud have done with a bit of toning, but hey she was on a vacation with her hubby in Greece before the event, and who diets on a vacay?

Not too big on the silvery eyemakeup. I think L’Oreal can do much better than that. But the worst is the hair. I don’t know wat pisses me off more – the colour or the quiff/beehive/amazon warrior nest?

the raised right eyebrow is a bit distressing. But as pointed out by others, Ash never has a perfect 10 at Cannes. And in comparison to her first appearances in Cannes, this is a definite improvement. Is Raavana gettin premiered at Cannes? If so, then the audience can see wat this lady’s beauty is all about.

  48. Think the gown is lovely – but whats going on with the hairdo! She should have opted for an elegant hairstyle with this dress. I think the mature look is definately showing now, no doubt she is beautiful but age is kicking in and her glow doesnt seem to be there…but that could have to do with the makeup! Lets wait and see what she will be strutting the red carpet in next!!

    • Maybe us desis (and what pray are you, if not one of us?) need to become more edgy, but that isnt the most important thing in life. You on the other hand, definitely need to get rid anglophilia and develop opinions of your own. Fashion is SUBJECTIVE my friend. Its not about mindlessly aping the west. Thats the difference between a fashion victim and a fahsionista. Maybe you havent noticed, but an overwhelming number of western designers have been inspired by Indian prints, silhouttes, jewellery and colors in recent times.

Also, most international websites have said that she looks fabulous EXCEPT for her hair. So I really dont undertsand what you are on about

      • Get real most indians ape the west. All of India needs to get rid of anlophophillia which is my point exactly. From calling thier mother “MOM’ as though they r american themselves mind you in desi accents to wearing minis and bikinis instead of indian wear all the time too. Even on indian fashion sites the only praise is for western wear when do you guys ever praise a sari or salwar? Anyone wearing one is called an aunty. My point is mostly the fashion crowd is CopyCat western wannabees.

        Reply
        • Excuse me? Most Indians ape the west fashion-wise? Thats why India is one of the few countries where traditional wear is still worn by most people? Thats why everyone on this site goes ga-ga over sridevi/ hema malini in a traditional sari? (and this is really the only popular Indian fashion blog there is)

          Plus when you say this:
“Maybe the desi crowd here at highheel is just not with it or know edgy fashion trends as much as they think they do”

Its obvious that you are NOT advocating that Indians stop aping the west, but rather that Indians do not have a good fashion sense. Also, to say that ALL Indians ape the west and make this a national issue is pretty pointless, not to mention a HUGE generalization

  52. I really think we should stop critisizing her for her weight. Come on ladies, how many times have you heard indirectly that you are looking ‘healthy’ and wanted to kill the person who said that? So why are we going after her now?
P&P I really thought you would not publish comments that are talking about her weight or how untoned she is. Isn’t this a purely fashion site?

    • I would have agreed with you Shilpa if we were talking about a businesswoman or a political figure, but the thing is :
a- she’s representing India at an international event looking like this??
b- she’s in the business of looking good and gets paid a BOMB to look good, so shouldn’t she?

and for both these reasons she must be in best possible form – whether its her clothes or make up or hair or even size!

P.s- If someone told me I was looking healthy I would take it in the righr spirit and would def take action before I went for an international event.
For god’s sake! Cannes isl about the fashion and the beauty as much as it is about the movies and we all know that.

      • Even if she is representing India, I think she should definitely wear clothes that look good on her, but expecting her to maintain her body a certain way is a bit much, don’t you think?
Kate Winslet comes to mind. There might not be a more popular and bigger celebrity, but how many people have really critisized her for not being as thin as the others? She is always on the **ahem** healthier side but her confidence rocks. agreed Aishwarya should not have gone ahead with that ghastly hairdo, but definitely don’t agree that she should lose weight etc just because she is a celebrity!

I get that she’s representing India at an international level, but what do you mean when you say , ” looking like this?” LMAO you’re acting like she looks hideous!(which she never can may I add); STOP being so hard on her people, she is human afterr all, and we all make fashion faux pas! GET OVER IT!!

      • a. she is NOT representing india. she is representing (ironically, for you) a cosmetic brand, in her capacity as a professional in show-business. this is her individual appearance, not as miss india.

        b. she is in the business of looking good, and looks like she is promoting a healthy image. i do think she is looking very curvy and sexy for a 36 year old.

if you look at kate’s pics you cannot miss the similarity with ash’s hair do….even the gown colour is quite alike…..why did then she look like a diva n ash disappointed again??

is it just her recent weight gain….or the lil weird make up??ill never know….ash’s cannes looks have never been stellar….such a pity really….with that face she should have had a few diva looks in these past few years….sad indeed

The style, cut are so wrong. Makes her looks like a tun tun. Why would someone deliberately chose an unflattering style for a red carpet event that the WHOLE WORLD (all film lovers at-least) probably watching? She needs to dress her age.

I’m not even going to comment on the hair. ’nuff said! Btw, is it just me or is her LEFT EYEBROW stuck up there?

    • a) she is not representing india. is eva longoria parker representing the US? did we take salma hayek to be an ambassador of mexico? ms rai is at cannes as a brand ambassador! we have to stop pinning so much patriotism with her turn-out.

      b) she is paid a bomb, but you and i are not paying her. and her bosses probably decided what she was going to wear.

      c) cannes is about fashion and beauty and ms rai is there as a public figure. for these celebrities, so much gets written about their gowns, that the bosses help decide what they will wear. they probably have a statement they want to make.
you should be glad that the bosses are not forcing her to thin down, and helping cultivate a healthier image!

it’s almost like you promote it with all your negative comments. most of the posts that you girls feature you DO NOT LIKE. there’s probably 1 post out of every 10 that you give a slight nod of approval.
its sad to read all the negative comments and worst of all its the women putting down other women. are we all so unhappy in our own lives that it reflects on what we say about others.
you may not approve this post but i would like YOU girls to read it.
i know i’ll get comments like its only a fashion blog and everyone has a right to say what they want but please people think of how negative we have become even in trivial things like clothes and fashion.

    • Agree with you TOTALLY!

there is a lot of negativity on HHC. I really miss the good old HHC of 2 years ago where importance was given to fashion and only fashion.

Someone wearing a gown is shot down as aping western fashion, someone wearing a saree is called a behenji, words like “auntyji” are thrown about for 20 year old stunning women. It has become almost impossible to please the moderators. Every look is shot down for either the color of the belt or a strand of hair being out of place or eyshadow that doesnt match. Women like Aishwarya are caled mediocre and Freida Pinto was rooted for till she is an underdog, the moment she rose to the top, women here started wondering what was so special bout her, her average-ness was discussed day in and day out. Why is there so much hatred filled in our desis?

Ever wondered why all the old regulars have stopped commenting? Instead there is this new breed who have nothing to do other than criticize.

Payal and Priyanka, you need to take a good long hard look at your blog, your moderation policy and at yourselves. After all like you have memntioned before, the blog is an extension of your personality and with every passing day the comments on this site are getting worse.

      Thanks

  60. This may seem very archaic in this day and age.But here goes… I truely feel that at 36 the age shows on Aishwarya.Acting and looking a bimbette on the red carpet somehow seems far more acceptable when one is young. But at her age one would want her to be there for something serious and worthwhile or not at all.
Here she looks tired ,old, jaded and out of shape. Her hair do is weird and her make up is dull.

I dont know why people have to find faults in her always, its just jealousy, she looks much better than all the younger actresses put together, that too at her age!

  64. To all the people who talk about the Western media praising her style while Indians find fault, consider this: they praise her look because THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT SHE USUALLY LOOKS LIKE in India. We, however, DO know how amazingly stunning she looks at film functions and other events in India and that she looks a trillion times better when styled by her regular Indian stylist(s) than by L’Oreal. If we criticize her look it is because we know that she’s capable of looking absolutely smoking, which she rarely does in those bland gowns and fugly hairstyles.

For example, compare her look at the Jodha Akbar premiere to this red carpet appearance. No way is anybody going to be able to convince me that she looks better here. I’m sorry but no.

    • ha! this is true! If I had seen her for the first time today, wearing what she was, perhaps, I wouldn’t have cared so much. It’s more about her styling totally bringing her natural beauty down and that seems like such a shame.

      Reply
      • did not really mean that as a defense for her. i just thought that she gets the maximum feedback on this blog. seems like she draws the strongest sentiments, negative or positive.
dont they say you have arrived when people talk about you. :)

(and yes, i dont think she needs to be defended. she is secure enough in her late 30s to be taking risks like this appearance. she is our only female star to retain her real career post-marriage. as an actor she has worked with director ranging from david dhavan to bhansali and mani ratnam. she is popular all across, and still glamorous in her late 30s.

oddly, after miss world people thought she was only glamorous and could not act. now that she is a credible actor (having sevred on juries of film festivals too), it is her style that is doubted.)

but this is merely my opinion. i respect other opinions too. :)

It doesnt have to be a size zero vs. untoned look debate all the time. Wrong body type for this dress totally. This is just a technical crticism, am not an Aishwarya ”hater” or ”worshipper”.
